This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the administration of South Africa’s compensation system as a Senior Claims Assessor within the Compensation Fund, stationed at the Komani Labour Centre. Operating under the broader umbrella of the Department of Employment and Labour, the role is central to ensuring that registered and fatal claims are processed fairly, accurately, and in line with legislative prescripts. The incumbent will work within a structured environment that demands both technical proficiency in claims handling and a strong commitment to customer-oriented service delivery, as the Fund interacts with vulnerable workers, dependants, and employers who rely on timely and correct benefit decisions.
Candidates must hold a Senior Certificate together with a three-year recognised qualification at NQF level 6, as evaluated by SAQA, in fields such as Public Management, Business Management, Operations Management, Management, Human Resources Management, Nursing, Law or LLB, B.Com, Finance, or Administration. A valid driver’s licence is required, as is at least two years of practical experience within a compensation or medical claims processing environment. The role demands a thorough working knowledge of several key frameworks, including claims handling procedures, the Public Service Act and Regulations, COID tariffs, the Public Service Charter, approved COID delegations, the Promotion of Access to Information Act, the Road Accident Fund, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. In addition, the successful applicant must demonstrate a range of competencies including accountability, analytical thinking, attention to detail, brand and customer oriented service delivery, business and finance acumen, effective communication, emotional intelligence, ethics and governance, and team orientation.
The core duties involve adjudicating registered and fatal claims in accordance with delegation requirements, verifying claim details, and referring complex cases to medical services for further adjudication. The assessor will also authorise compensation benefits within the limits of their delegated authority, handle complex inquiries from stakeholders, and conduct advocacy sessions to explain rights and processes. Supervision of staff forms an integral part of the role, meaning the incumbent must balance casework with leadership responsibilities, ensuring that team outputs remain accurate and compliant. This combination of technical adjudication and people management makes the position suitable for an individual who is both detail-driven and capable of guiding others.
As a public service post, the vacancy is subject to employment equity objectives. Applications from African Males, White Males, White Females, Coloured Males, Coloured Females, Indian Males, Indian Females, and People with Disabilities are particularly encouraged, in line with the department’s commitment to a representative workforce. The position is advertised through the official departmental circular system, and interested candidates should note that the closing date and application procedures are specified in the full advertisement. Given the specialised nature of the work, prospective applicants should ensure that their qualifications and experience align closely with the stated requirements before applying. This is a demanding but rewarding role for those seeking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of workers and their families through the fair and efficient administration of compensation benefits.
