The Department of Correctional Services is seeking to fill the position of Accounting Clerk: Exchequer Control within its Financial Accounting directorate at the National Head Office. This entry-level clerical role is central to the department's financial governance and exchequer functions, ensuring that public funds are properly accounted for and that financial transactions comply with relevant legislation. The successful candidate will join a team responsible for managing warrant vouchers, official banking accounts, and the flow of financial documentation within the Basic Accounting System (BAS). This position offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a Grade 12 certificate to begin a career in public sector financial administration.

Candidates must hold a Grade 12 or equivalent qualification and be computer literate. No prior work experience is required, making this an accessible entry point for aspiring accounting clerks. Knowledge of BAS will be a distinct advantage, as the system is used extensively in the execution of duties. The ideal applicant will demonstrate the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, possess strong verbal and written communication skills, and have a sound understanding of financial accounting processes and procedures. The role also demands the capacity to perform under pressure and to handle confidential matters with discretion, given the sensitive nature of public finance administration.

The core duties of the position encompass the full spectrum of exchequer control activities. The accounting clerk will handle all aspects relating to warrant vouchers, from processing to verification, and will exercise control over official banking accounts, including any amendments that may arise. The role further involves controlling BAS input documents to ensure accuracy and completeness, as well as assisting with the clearance of asset and liability accounts. In addition to these technical tasks, the incumbent will manage telephone queries, faxes, and letters, and will liaise with relevant bodies and sections to facilitate smooth financial operations. The position also carries specific statutory responsibilities under Section 45 of the Public Finance Management Act, which places a duty on officials to safeguard state assets and ensure proper financial management. Asset management is therefore a key component of the role.

This appointment will be made under the Public Service Act, and the post is based at the National Head Office. Interested applicants should take note of the application procedure specified in the official advertisement, as the department has a strict submission process. This is a permanent, full-time position within the public service, offering a stable career path with the Department of Correctional Services. The role is ideal for detail-oriented individuals who take pride in accurate financial record-keeping and who wish to contribute to the accountable use of public resources.
