This position offers an opportunity for an experienced correctional services professional to step into a training and facilitation role within the Department of Correctional Services. Based at either the Kroonstad Training College or the Zonderwater Training College, the successful candidate will act as a Specialised Security Officer Grade 1, specifically serving as a Facilitator. The role sits within the broader correctional science learnership programme, which is central to developing new correctional officials. As a facilitator, the incumbent will be responsible for guiding learners through both theoretical instruction and practical experiential learning, ensuring that they are properly prepared for the demands of working in a correctional environment. The post is a career-graded position under the Correctional Service Act, and it requires a blend of operational security expertise, teaching ability, and administrative competence.
Applicants must hold a Matric or Grade 12 certificate, or alternatively a relevant Degree or National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Behavioural Sciences. In addition, successful completion of the Correctional Science Learnership or Basic Training is mandatory. For those who have been appointed at the entry-level production post, known as CB1, a minimum of ten years of relevant experience is required. However, candidates who possess the relevant NQF level 6 qualification are not required to have prior experience for appointment to this post. Being registered and accredited as an Assessor and Moderator will be considered an added advantage. A valid driver’s licence and computer literacy are also essential. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong firearm skills and proficiency in using security technology, along with competencies in communication, project and programme management, transformation, change management, stakeholder engagement, problem solving, analysis, service delivery innovation, decision making, people management, and empowerment. A deep understanding of safety and security within a correctional setting is critical, as is knowledge of the Correctional Services Act, Act 111 of 1998, as amended. The role demands integrity, honesty, confidentiality, good interpersonal relations, assertiveness, networking ability, and diplomacy.
The core duties of the facilitator are wide-ranging. The incumbent will manage learnership administration, including the establishment and preparation of each learner’s Portfolio of Evidence. They will plan, prepare, and manage resources, and ensure that training facilities and equipment are available and maintained. This includes arranging sleeping accommodation for learners and preparing training rooms before the start of each correctional science learnership programme. The facilitator will present instructional learning, prepare learners for experiential learning, and implement training and development processes. They will also research new international and national trends in corrections to keep the curriculum current. Evaluating training and providing constructive feedback is a key responsibility, as is managing learners and working collaboratively as part of a team. The post also carries managerial duties related to performance information, finances, human resources, and assets within the section. This is a demanding role that requires someone who can balance operational discipline with a developmental approach to training, ensuring that new correctional officials are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to uphold the mandate of the Department of Correctional Services.
