The Department of Correctional Services is seeking a State Accountant for Financial Statement and Debt Control, based at its National Head Office under the Directorate Financial Accounting. This role sits within the financial management environment and is central to ensuring the accuracy, integrity and lawful handling of the department’s debtor accounts and financial reporting. The incumbent will support the preparation of annual financial statements and the broader debt collection process, making a direct contribution to sound financial governance and compliance with the Public Service regulatory framework. This is a Public Service Act appointment, and the post is advertised through a departmental circular.

Applicants must possess an appropriate degree or National Diploma in a finance-related field, with Accounting, Financial Management, or Cost and Management Accounting as a major subject. At least one to two years of relevant finance experience in debt management is required, along with working knowledge of the Basic Accounting System (BAS). Computer literacy and a valid driver’s licence are essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong data analysis, problem-solving, communication, presentation and report-writing skills, supported by sound clerical, numeracy, organisational and time-management abilities. Knowledge of the Public Finance Management Act and an understanding of the broader public service legislative framework are key, as the role requires a high level of integrity, attention to detail and accountability. The ability to work independently and under pressure is also important.

In terms of duties, the State Accountant will assist with the preparation of annual financial statements in accordance with modified cash standards. This includes performing monthly debtor reconciliations and resolving reconciling items, assisting with debt collection processes to ensure timely recovery of outstanding amounts, and ensuring that all debtor transactions are recorded accurately and timeously in the appropriate accounts. The role requires ensuring that transactions captured on BAS are authorised within prescribed timeframes, maintaining proper filing systems and safeguarding debtor records for audit purposes. The incumbent will also handle daily administrative duties within the Debt Control section, coordinate monthly stationery requirements, and monitor monthly reports on the status of suspense accounts. A critical aspect of the role is ensuring reporting complies with section 32 of the PFMA by maintaining effective financial management and internal controls. Additionally, the position entails managing performance information, resources, finance and assets within the delegated scope.

This position offers an opportunity for a detail-oriented finance professional to contribute to public sector financial accountability and debt recovery. Candidates should be prepared to work in a structured government environment that values compliance, accuracy and efficiency. The closing date, reference number and salary package are indicated in the official advertisement, and interested applicants should review the application requirements carefully before applying.
