This vacancy is for an Assistant Director: Strategic Planning and Management, based at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services. The successful candidate will join the Strategic Planning and Management directorate, a unit responsible for steering the department’s planning cycle and ensuring alignment with government-wide planning frameworks. The role is a middle-management position that requires a blend of strategic oversight, operational coordination, and stakeholder engagement, with a strong focus on translating departmental priorities into measurable plans and reports.
To be considered, applicants must hold a recognised National Diploma at NQF Level 6 or a degree in Strategic Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Accounting or Auditing, Public Administration, Business Management, or a related field. In addition, at least three to five years of experience in a planning environment is required. The department is looking for someone who is computer literate, holds a valid driver’s licence, and has formal training in strategic planning and performance monitoring. Key competencies include a thorough understanding of strategic planning processes and the government planning cycle, applied strategic thinking, report writing and quality assurance, excellent facilitation and communication skills, and proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint. Knowledge of government policies, acts and regulations, as well as monitoring and evaluation in the public sector, is essential. The role also demands financial management skills, good interpersonal relations, a commitment to good governance, and strong analytical, planning, organising and problem-solving abilities.
The main duties of the post are wide-ranging. The Assistant Director will coordinate the development and review of the Departmental Strategic Plan, the Annual Performance Plan (APP), and Annual Operational Plans. This includes monitoring the implementation of departmental planning frameworks and approved plans to ensure that objectives are met and that reporting remains accurate and timely. The incumbent will provide strategic planning advice and technical support to both Head Office and regional offices, helping to translate high-level priorities into operational activities. Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders on planning matters is another core responsibility, as is the management of performance information, human resources, finance and assets within the component.
This is a permanent appointment under the Public Service Act, and the post is advertised through the Public Service Vacancy Circular. The position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the strategic direction of a major national department.
