This vacancy is for an Assistant Director: Workstudy and Job Evaluation within the Organisational Development directorate at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services. The role is central to improving service delivery through systematic work study, job evaluation and organisational design. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting work-study investigations and feasibility studies aimed at enhancing how the department delivers services. This involves analysing existing processes, identifying inefficiencies and recommending evidence-based improvements. In addition, the position requires facilitating the development and scrutiny of job descriptions and job profiling, ensuring that all roles within the department are accurately documented and aligned with the broader organisational structure. The Assistant Director will also conduct job evaluations, applying a recognised evaluation system to determine the relative worth of positions and ensure equitable grading. Another key responsibility is developing and reviewing the organisational structure, as well as aligning the post establishment with the approved structure. This calls for close collaboration with managers across the department and a solid understanding of organisational development principles.
Candidates must possess a National Diploma or Degree in Management Services, Organisational Development, Operations Management, Production Management, Industrial and Organisational Psychology, or a relevant equivalent qualification. A certificate in Job Evaluation analysis from the National School of Government is mandatory. Applicants should have between three and five years of experience in a comparable environment, along with a working knowledge of work-study techniques. Computer literacy and a valid driver's licence are also required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a wide range of competencies, including people management, presentation, report writing, financial management, problem solving, planning, organising, facilitation and time management. Knowledge of the compensate evaluate system is essential, as is the ability to analyse and interpret policy. Strong communication, analytical and conceptual skills are needed, together with expertise in job analysis, group dynamics, diversity management, coordination, project management and leadership. The role also demands service delivery innovation, change and knowledge management capabilities, sound interpersonal relations, pro-activeness, professionalism, accuracy, influence, confidentiality and integrity. The successful candidate must be able to network effectively, work independently and as part of a team, and remain flexible and willing to operate under changing or difficult circumstances, including long hours when necessary.
In terms of day-to-day responsibilities, the Assistant Director will manage performance information, human resources, finance and assets within the component. This includes overseeing the work of subordinates, ensuring that financial resources are used appropriately and that assets are accounted for. The position also involves facilitating change management processes, which is critical as the department continues to refine its structures and ways of working. Appointment to this post will be made under the Public Service Act, and the successful candidate will be based at the National Head Office. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a professional with a strong background in work study and job evaluation who is ready to contribute to the strategic development of the Department of Correctional Services.
