This position operates within the Directorate: Logistics at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services, where the incumbent will act as the Assistant Director for Operational Training. The role is central to building and maintaining the competence of logistics personnel across the department, ensuring that all operational training is planned, coordinated, and delivered in line with departmental strategies and legislative frameworks. The post is graded as an OSD position and falls under the Public Service Act, meaning the successful candidate will be subject to public service employment conditions and regulations.
To be considered for this role, applicants must hold a Degree or National Diploma in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a relevant qualification, alongside at least three to five years of experience working in logistics as a supervisor at salary level 8. In addition, LOGIS training is required, as is computer literacy and a valid driver’s licence. The department is looking for someone with a solid understanding of the regulatory and policy environment governing logistics and training, including the PFMA Section 38(1), Treasury regulations, the applicable sections of the White Paper on Corrections, the DCS strategic plan, Public Service regulations, and HRD policies and procedures. Familiarity with the Skills Development Act, Act 97 of 1998, is also necessary, as is knowledge of the Provisioning Administration System Manual, the PAS/PAS system, the Web asset tool, and the Supply Chain Management guide for accounting officers. The role demands strong analytical thinking, personal integrity, honesty, and commitment, as well as the ability to liaise effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. The post also requires practical skills in using office administration tools and managing statistics on a computerised database.
The core duties of the Assistant Director involve compiling and coordinating the operational training plan for the Logistics Directorate, as well as scheduling training needs for ad hoc logistics training interventions. The incumbent will facilitate the formulation, development, and maintenance of operational training material, ensuring it remains current and relevant. Another key responsibility is to coordinate and provide training information and advice to relevant stakeholders, which requires clear communication and working relationships across the department. Beyond training-specific tasks, the role carries management responsibilities covering human resources, finance, and assets, meaning the post holder must oversee resources effectively within the directorate. The management of performance information is also a crucial part of the role, ensuring that training outcomes and operational performance data are captured, maintained, and used to guide decision-making. Interested candidates should note that this is a structured public service position based at head office, and the selection process will assess both technical logistics expertise and the broader managerial and regulatory knowledge needed to support operational training at a national level.
