The Assistant Director: Physical Security position sits within the Security Standards and Management directorate at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services. This role is central to safeguarding the integrity of correctional facilities by ensuring that physical security policies, systems, and procedures are not only developed but also effectively implemented and monitored across the department. As a senior management support role, the incumbent will be expected to provide expert guidance on security standards, conduct risk assessments, and lead investigations into security breaches, thereby contributing directly to the broader correctional mandate of safety, order, and rehabilitation. The position operates within the Public Service Act framework and is based at the head office, but the role involves regular liaison with stakeholders and a willingness to travel, reflecting its oversight function across multiple sites and contexts.

To be considered for this role, applicants must hold a recognised three-year degree in the Criminal Justice field or a related qualification. In addition, between three and five years of relevant experience in a similar security management environment is required. Practical foundational requirements include computer literacy and a valid driver’s licence, as the position demands mobility and the ability to engage with digital reporting and analysis tools. Beyond these baseline requirements, the successful candidate will need a strong blend of technical and behavioural competencies. This includes financial management skills, project management capabilities, and the ability to plan, organise, lead, and control security-related initiatives. Effective facilitation, presentation, report-writing, and negotiation skills are essential, as is conflict management. The role also calls for confidentiality, coaching and mentoring abilities, and a solid understanding of Public Service policy, the Correctional Service Act, and the broader legislative framework governing the department. Personal attributes such as integrity, honesty, assertiveness, client orientation, and a commitment to service delivery are equally important.

The main duties of the Assistant Director: Physical Security are wide-ranging and carry significant responsibility. The incumbent will develop and implement security policy and procedures, ensuring they remain relevant and compliant with legislative requirements. A key part of the job is conducting security threat and risk assessments for the Department of Correctional Services and analysing the resulting risk assessment documents and reports to inform decision-making. The role also involves coordinating and ensuring the existence of reliable security systems, which may include physical infrastructure, technological controls, and procedural safeguards. When breaches occur, the Assistant Director will conduct thorough security breach investigations, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions. Additionally, the position requires evaluating and improving the effectiveness of existing security measures and procedures, so continuous assessment and refinement are core to the role. Finally, the incumbent will manage performance information, finances, human resources, and assets within their area of responsibility, ensuring that security operations are both effective and resource-efficient.

The appointment is made under the Public Service Act, which means the successful candidate will be subject to public service regulations and conditions. This is a demanding role that requires a proactive, analytical, and collaborative approach. It offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the safety and security of correctional services in South Africa. Those interested should ensure they meet all the qualifications and competencies outlined above, as the selection process will be rigorous and focused on finding a candidate who can handle both strategic policy development and hands-on operational security management.
