This position is for a Security Manager specialising in Basic Training at the Kroonstad Training College, within the Department of Correctional Services. The role is a re-advertisement, meaning those who applied previously must submit a fresh application. It is a supervisory and managerial post focused on the delivery of foundational training for correctional officials, ensuring that new personnel are properly instructed, assessed, and prepared for the realities of working in a correctional environment. The manager will operate within the broader framework of the Correctional Services Act and will be expected to uphold the values of the department, including secure detention, humane incarceration, and the facilitation of rehabilitation.

The successful candidate must hold a relevant Degree or National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Behavioural Sciences, and must have successfully completed the Corrections Science Learnership or Basic Training. At least seven years of relevant experience in a supervisory post is required. Additional advantages include being registered and accredited as an Assessor and Moderator, being computer literate, and holding a valid driver’s licence. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong competencies in financial management, physical wellness, problem-solving and decision-making, facilitation and presentation, planning and organising, project management, conflict management, report writing, coaching and mentoring, and time management. Leadership qualities such as change management, the ability to lead and control, team leadership, confidentiality, integrity, and honesty are essential. A sound understanding of Public Service policies and legislative frameworks, service delivery orientation, assertiveness, networking ability, influence and impact, strategic thinking, and a willingness to travel are also required.

The duties of the Security Manager encompass overseeing instructional and experiential learning, supervising the facilitation of presentations, and administering classes within the correctional environment. The role also involves preparing and supervising assessments, ensuring safe and secure detention, supporting rehabilitation processes, and overseeing custodial duties in correctional or remand detention settings. In addition to these operational responsibilities, the manager will manage performance information, human resources, finance, and assets, making this a comprehensive management role that balances training outcomes with administrative and custodial obligations.

This is an OSD-graded position based at a training college, and appointment will be made under the Correctional Services Act. Candidates should note that applications are only accepted through the departmental online portal, with no alternative submission methods considered. The post appears in the specified Public Service Vacancy circular and offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the professional development of correctional staff within a structured and demanding public service environment.
