This vacancy is for an Assistant Director: Monitoring and Evaluation within the Community Liaison Directorate at the Department of Correctional Services’ National Head Office. The role is a supervisory, policy-focused position aimed at strengthening how the department plans, implements, and assesses community involvement programmes. It sits at a middle-management level and requires a blend of strategic oversight, operational coordination, and stakeholder engagement. The successful candidate will work within a national framework, ensuring that community liaison activities are aligned with departmental policies, legislative prescripts, and the broader goals of correctional services.
To be considered, applicants must hold a relevant Degree or National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Behavioural Sciences, alongside at least five years of supervisory experience at a level equivalent to NCB 2. Completion of the Corrections Science Learnership or Basic Training is a mandatory requirement, as is computer literacy and possession of a valid driver’s licence. The role demands a strong working knowledge of the Public Service Act, regulations, policies, and procedures. In addition, the ideal candidate will bring well-developed analytical, problem-solving, and report-writing skills, as well as the ability to negotiate, listen, communicate, research, facilitate, and present effectively. Networking and liaison with both internal and external stakeholders are central to the position, so proven interpersonal skills and the ability to initiate change are essential. Project management, monitoring and evaluation expertise, and sound financial management are also required to handle the varied responsibilities of the post.
The duties attached to this role are comprehensive. The Assistant Director will be responsible for developing national policies and procedures relating to community liaison, then monitoring and evaluating how those policies are implemented across the system. This includes designing monitoring tools to track performance and impact, managing and coordinating the activities of community involvement, and liaising with external service providers who deliver community-related services. The candidate will also manage performance information, ensuring that data is accurately collected and used for decision-making. Furthermore, the post carries line-management responsibilities, including managing human resources, finance, and assets within the component. This makes the role as much about administrative leadership as it is about policy development and evaluation.
This is an appointment made under the Correctional Services Act, and the position is based at the National Head Office. Interested candidates should be prepared to meet strict eligibility requirements and demonstrate both strategic and operational competence. The role offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the department’s community reintegration and liaison efforts, making it suitable for an experienced professional with a background in behavioural sciences and a proven track record in supervision, monitoring, and stakeholder management.
