The Assistant Director: Design/Develop Profile Mechanism is a supervisory-level post based at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services, operating within the Risk Profile Management directorate. This role sits at the heart of the department’s efforts to understand and respond to offender behaviour by ensuring that robust, evidence-based profiling mechanisms are in place. The position is graded under the Correctional Services occupational-specific dispensation and carries the responsibilities associated with managing a specialised unit that contributes to institutional safety and rehabilitation outcomes.

To be considered for this role, candidates must hold a relevant Degree or National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Behavioural Sciences. At least five years of relevant experience is required, gained while serving in a supervisory post. In addition, applicants must have successfully completed the Correctional Science Learnership or Basic Training, be computer literate, and possess a valid driver’s licence. The department looks for a professional with strong knowledge of the Correctional Services Act, Act 111 of 1998, as amended, as well as the relevant sections of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a range of competencies including assertiveness, networking and liaison with internal and external stakeholders, report writing, negotiation, facilitation, presentation, project management, research, communication, listening, stakeholder management, problem-solving and analytical abilities. Sound decision-making, people management and empowerment skills are essential, alongside integrity, honesty, confidentiality and good interpersonal relations.

The core duties involve facilitating the development and maintenance of systems designed for offender profiling mechanisms. This includes creating and updating mechanisms to establish and profile crime categories, conducting profiling and research, and coordinating the development and implementation of policies in line with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for the management of performance information, ensuring that data is accurate and used to inform decisions. In addition, the position carries managerial accountability for human resources, finance and assets within the component, requiring a balanced focus on both operational delivery and administrative oversight.

This appointment is made under the Correctional Services Act, and candidates should be prepared for the security and integrity requirements that accompany such a position. The role is suited to a seasoned professional who can lead a technical team, work collaboratively across the criminal justice sector, and uphold the ethical standards expected within a correctional environment.
