This position is for an Assistant Director responsible for presentations within the Pre-Release Resettlement directorate at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services. The role is a middle-management supervisory post, graded under the OSD system, and focuses on the intersection of offender representation, victim involvement, and the functioning of Correctional Supervision and Parole Boards. The incumbent will work from the national office, supporting the directorate in shaping policy, managing stakeholder liaison, and ensuring that the department's obligations around parole board representations are carried out effectively.
Applicants must hold a relevant degree or national diploma at NQF level 6 in Behavioural Sciences, together with at least five years of relevant experience gained while serving in a supervisory post. Successful completion of the Correctional Science Learnership or basic correctional training is required, as are computer literacy and a valid driver's licence. The role demands a thorough knowledge of the Correctional Services Act, Act 111 of 1998, as amended, and the relevant sections of the Criminal Procedure Act 51/1977, along with strong assertiveness and the ability to network and liaise with internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the post calls for well-developed report writing, negotiation, facilitation, presentation, project management, research, communication, listening, stakeholder management, problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills. Personal integrity, people management abilities, confidentiality, honesty and good interpersonal relations are also essential attributes.
The core duties involve developing and reviewing policies and procedures on representation and victim involvement in Correctional Supervision and Parole Boards. The Assistant Director will undertake research into best practice, administer ordinary and ministerial representations, and receive submissions from various interested parties. Operationalising victim involvement policies is a key part of the role, along with drafting implementation plans and managing media and parliamentary questions, including receiving inquiries from media houses. The position also carries responsibility for managing performance information, finances, human resources and assets within the component.
This appointment is made under the Correctional Services Act, and the post is advertised through a departmental circular. Candidates should note that the position is based at the National Head Office and is subject to the usual public service employment conditions. As with many correctional services posts, the department may apply employment equity considerations when shortlisting and selecting candidates, and successful applicants will be expected to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and ethical conduct in handling sensitive representation and victim-related matters.
