The Department of Correctional Services is seeking an Assistant Director for Remand Detention Systems and Support, based at the National Head Office within the Remand Detention System Management directorate. This is a supervisory and coordination role focused on the effective management, upgrading, and operational support of remand detention facilities (RDFs) across the country. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of functions that ensure remand detainees are managed efficiently, safely, and in line with legislative and departmental frameworks. This position is an OSD-graded post and appointment is subject to the Correctional Services Act, reflecting the regulatory and security-sensitive nature of the work.

Applicants must hold a relevant Degree or National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Behavioural Sciences, coupled with at least five years of experience in a supervisory post at the NCB 2 level. Completion of the Correctional Science Learnership or Basic Training is a mandatory requirement. Candidates should be computer literate and in possession of a valid driver’s licence. The role demands a strong set of competencies, including analytical thinking, policy review and development, human resource management, research skills, and financial management. Knowledge of security systems development, compliance management, and the monitoring and evaluation of safety legislation, particularly in construction, is also required. The ability to apply safety legislation, manage projects, and communicate effectively through report writing and presentations is essential.

The duties of the post are extensive and cover both strategic and operational responsibilities. The Assistant Director will manage virtual courts, coordinate the upgrading and refurbishment of remand detention facilities, and oversee the installation and maintenance of equipment, including the APIS system. The role also requires gathering statistics and compiling reports on court appearances and the tracking and verification of remand detainees. Policy development and review are central to the position, including drafting specifications, developing training frameworks for officials working in RDFs, and assisting with orientation programmes. The successful candidate will evaluate safety and security tenders, contribute to feasibility studies, and ensure the effective use of detention management and management information systems, with a strong emphasis on data integrity. The management of performance information, finances, human resources, and assets forms an integral part of the daily work.

This is a demanding role that requires a candidate who can work at both a strategic and practical level, balancing policy development with the operational realities of managing remand detention systems. The position is based at the National Head Office, and enquiries may be directed to the named contact persons. Applicants must apply online, as other forms of submission are not accepted.
