This position is for an Assistant Director: Vetting at the National Head Office, situated within the Directorate: Security Standards and Management. The role is central to safeguarding the integrity of the department by conducting thorough security vetting investigations. As a senior figure, you will be expected to provide strategic and operational leadership in vetting processes, ensuring that all investigations are carried out in line with established norms, standards, and legislative frameworks. The work involves close collaboration with the State Security Agency and other related bodies, so the ability to maintain effective communication channels and build strong professional networks is essential.
To be considered for this post, applicants must possess a recognised Degree or National Diploma in Social Sciences or a related field, coupled with three to five years of security-related experience. A security vetting course from a recognised institution is mandatory, as is computer literacy and a valid driver’s licence. The role demands a broad range of competencies, including financial management, problem-solving, decision-making, facilitation, and project management. You should also demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, such as team leadership, change management, planning, organising, and controlling. Interpersonal skills are equally important, including conflict management, presentation skills, report writing, coaching, mentoring, and time management. A deep understanding of the Public Service policy and legislative framework is required, along with a strong service delivery and client orientation. Personal attributes such as confidentiality, integrity, honesty, assertiveness, and the ability to network and influence others are vital. Applied strategic thinking and a willingness to travel are also necessary.
The core duties of the role involve conducting vetting fieldwork investigations, which means you will be responsible for gathering and verifying information on individuals being vetted. You will also contribute to the development and implementation of policies, guidelines, norms, and standards for vetting investigations. This includes establishing effective communication systems between the department and the State Security Agency and other related agencies. Administrative oversight forms a significant part of the job, as you will manage vetting files and reports. Additionally, you will be responsible for managing performance information, finances, human resources, and assets within your area of work. This is a management-level position that requires balancing operational fieldwork with administrative and strategic responsibilities.
This appointment is made under the Public Service Act, and the post is graded accordingly. It is a demanding role suited to a security professional who is ready to take on leadership responsibilities within a national government environment. The position offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national security and public service integrity. If you meet the qualifications and have the required experience and competencies, this role provides a platform for professional growth and impact.
