This senior nursing management post, graded as an Assistant Manager Nursing at the PN-B4 level, sits within the Non-Communicable Diseases and Support Services directorate at the national head office. The successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Maternal, Child and Youth Health specialty, working to shape national policy, set clinical standards and drive programme performance for women, children, adolescents and youth. This is not a bedside role but a national-level position that demands a blend of clinical expertise, management acumen and policy insight.
To be considered, applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing, such as a diploma or degree, that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a one-year post-basic nursing qualification accredited by the SANC in the relevant specialty is required, along with active registration. The experience bar is substantial: at least ten years of recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing, of which six years must be in the specific specialty since obtaining the post-basic qualification, and at least three years must be at management level. Candidates also need to be computer literate and hold a valid driver’s licence. Beyond the formal qualifications, the role calls for an in-depth understanding of nursing legislation, legal and ethical practices, and how these affect service delivery. The ability to ensure clinical practice aligns with the scope of practice and nursing standards, to promote quality care, and to demonstrate a working knowledge of human resources and financial policies is essential. Strong communication skills are needed for interacting with patients, supervisors, other health professionals and junior colleagues, including report writing. The post requires someone who can work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team, manage their own time and that of junior staff, and display genuine concern for patients while upholding the principles of Batho Pele. Building and maintaining professional networks to enhance service delivery is also a key expectation.
The core duties centre on designing, developing, monitoring and reviewing policies, programmes and guidelines for special categories, specifically women, children, adolescents and youth. The manager will ensure the delivery of a comprehensive package of preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative services for these groups. This includes facilitating audits on the quality of clinical records, reporting on indicators and programme performance, and developing or reviewing information, education and communication material for these programmes. The role also carries significant resource management responsibilities: using resources efficiently, managing performance information, finances, human resources and assets, and executing the responsibilities of officials under section 45 of the Public Finance Management Act. Maintaining constructive working relationships with nursing and other stakeholders is a recurring theme throughout the duties. Appointment will be made under the Public Service Act, and this is a permanent, full-time opportunity based at the national head office. The post offers an opportunity to influence national health policy and improve outcomes for some of the most vulnerable population groups in South Africa.
