This position, based at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services, operates within the Employee Wellness and Occupational Health and Safety directorate. The Deputy Director for Wellness Centre Management is a senior supervisory role responsible for shaping the physical wellness agenda for the entire department. Working under the Public Service Act, the incumbent will lead the design and implementation of physical wellness policies and procedures aimed at improving the overall health and well-being of DCS employees. A central part of the role involves managing the establishment of departmental gymnasiums and wellness centres, ensuring they are properly equipped, maintained, and accessible. Beyond infrastructure, the position oversees all wellness programmes, including physical health assessments, exercise regimens, and nutritional guidance, ensuring these initiatives are delivered effectively across the organisation.
To be considered for this post, candidates must hold an appropriate three-year National Diploma or Degree in Bio-kinetics, Sports Management, or a relevant qualification. Applicants need three to five years of supervisory experience at Assistant Director level within health and wellness or a related environment. Practical experience and knowledge of biokinetics, gymnasiums, and sport will be a distinct advantage. The role demands a solid understanding of the Public Service policy and legislative framework, along with experience in wellness programmes, human resources, logistics, and project management. Strong statistical analysis skills are essential, with formal training in SPSS or a similar modelling tool. The successful candidate must be proficient in policy development, analysis, coordination, and implementation, and possess excellent communication, facilitation, and programme management abilities. Other required competencies include change management, client orientation, customer focus, problem solving, service delivery innovation, people management, and empowerment. Personal attributes such as integrity, honesty, confidentiality, and good interpersonal relations are non-negotiable. An in-depth knowledge of employee health and wellness programmes, the capacity to network with external stakeholders, and financial management skills are also critical. Computer literacy and a valid driver’s licence are mandatory.
The core duties are broad and include conducting statistical analysis of physical health assessment data, interpreting quantitative information, compiling physical health reports, managing performance information, and overseeing human resources, finance, and assets. The role also requires proactive management and oversight of all physical wellness programmes, ensuring that they align with departmental objectives. This is a demanding leadership position that requires both strategic vision and hands-on operational management. Interested applicants should note that appointment is subject to the Public Service Act, and that the vacancy is advertised through the department’s official circular. As this is a senior management role within a large government department, the successful candidate will be expected to uphold the highest standards of governance, confidentiality, and service delivery.
