This senior management position is for a Deputy Director responsible for transport management within the Logistics component at the National Head Office of the Department of Correctional Services. The role sits within the public service and is appointed under the Public Service Act, meaning the incumbent will operate within a regulated government environment. The successful candidate will lead and coordinate the transport management sub-directorate, ensuring that all transport and fleet activities align with departmental objectives, legislative requirements, and delegated authority. This is a strategic and operational leadership role that requires a blend of technical transport knowledge, financial management acumen, and people management skills.

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree or National Diploma in Transport Management, Logistics Management, Public Management, Supply Chain Management, Fleet Management, or a related qualification. In addition, applicants need five years of experience in transport management, fleet management, logistics management, or a closely related environment, with at least three of those years at an Assistant Director or supervisory level. Computer literacy and a valid driver's licence are essential. The department looks for a leader with a strong working knowledge of Treasury regulations, labour legislation, the Public Service Act and regulations, the PFMA and its regulations, the DCS delegation of authority, performance appraisal manuals, disciplinary codes and procedures, the White Paper on Corrections, transport management policy, the code of conduct, departmental vehicle and subsidised transport procedure manuals, and the DCS strategic plan. This knowledge base is critical for ensuring compliance and providing sound advisory services.

The duties are broad and include managing and coordinating the transport management sub-directorate, monitoring compliance with legislation, policies, procedures, directives, and delegated powers, and overseeing departmental fleet management functions to ensure effective control of government vehicles. The Deputy Director will also be responsible for financial management and audit coordination, stakeholder management, and providing advisory services. Another key responsibility is managing and coordinating the departmental transport management training programme, as well as managing performance information. The role also entails direct management of human resources, finance, and assets within the sub-directorate.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong planning, organising, leadership, and control abilities, along with conflict management, customer awareness, and responsiveness. Analytical thinking, decision-making, advisory skills, and productivity are essential, as are initiative, integrity, credibility, commitment, and concern for others. The department values individuals who are accommodating, fair, loyal, tolerant, energetic, observant, patient, persuasive, and punctual. Creativity, flexibility, strategic thinking, and the ability to embrace change and apply technology effectively in support of organisational goals are also important attributes. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a seasoned transport management professional seeking to contribute to the effective functioning of a national department. The position is based at the National Head Office, and interested applicants should note that the appointment is subject to the Public Service Act.
