This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Radio Operator within the Law Enforcement Operations component of the Western Cape Mobility Department, under the Western Cape Government. The role is situated within the Directorate Traffic Law Enforcement, where the incumbent will be responsible for the operational functioning of radio communication systems that support traffic law enforcement activities across the province. With various posts available in different components, the successful candidate will become part of a team dedicated to ensuring effective communication, coordination, and monitoring during law enforcement operations. The role demands a high level of professionalism, accuracy, and the ability to remain calm and decisive in high-stress situations, as radio operators are often the critical link between officers in the field and command structures.

To be considered for this role, applicants must possess a Grade 12 Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification, along with certification in radio communication or a related field. The position requires a solid working knowledge of relevant policies and prescripts, radio frequency principles and practices, and the operation and maintenance of communication equipment such as transceivers and antennas. Candidates should also be familiar with additional communication technologies, software, and logging tools, as well as internal departmental technological systems used for communication monitoring, information capturing, and operational coordination. Strong computer skills, effective planning and organising abilities, and excellent verbal communication skills are essential. The ability to interpret information accurately, solve problems creatively, make sound decisions quickly, and work effectively under pressure is also critical. Furthermore, the role requires a commitment to customer care, report compilation, and adherence to emergency response procedures and radio etiquette.

The core duties of the Radio Operator involve operating radio communication equipment to transmit and receive messages accurately and efficiently, ensuring quality assurance through the maintenance of radio equipment, and staying abreast of new communication technologies, policies, and emerging developments relevant to the Directorate. Record keeping and filing are also integral responsibilities, ensuring that all communications and operational data are properly documented. The working environment may require irregular hours, including nights, weekends, or public holidays, and the ability to meet tight deadlines is essential.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews on a date determined by the department and must submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. Failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in disqualification from the process. All shortlisted candidates will also undertake two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine suitability based on technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment relating to ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers or managers for employment references, which will include enquiries into disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for individuals who thrive in dynamic environments and are committed to supporting public safety through reliable and efficient communication.
