This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Provincial Inspector within the Law Enforcement Operations unit of the Western Cape Mobility Department, under the Western Cape Government. The role is central to the operational functioning of the Directorate Traffic Law Enforcement, with multiple posts available across the province. As a Provincial Inspector, you will be responsible for enforcing road traffic, public passenger and transport legislation, ensuring that drivers, vehicles and road users comply with the applicable legal framework. The work involves conducting both driver and vehicle fitness inspections, managing impoundment procedures, and completing all necessary traffic law enforcement documentation. You will also provide visible traffic control and policing, actively promoting crime prevention activities while carrying out your duties. This is a field-oriented role that requires regular travel, working under pressure, and the ability to meet tight deadlines, often outside of normal working hours.

To be considered for this post, applicants must have a minimum of Grade 12 or an equivalent or higher qualification, together with at least one year of practical experience in law enforcement. A basic traffic diploma is mandatory, as is a valid driving licence Code B or higher. Importantly, people with disabilities that restrict driving abilities but who have reasonable access to transport may also apply. The role demands a thorough knowledge of key legislation, including the National Road Traffic Act, the National Road Traffic Amendment Act, the Firearms Control Act, the Criminal Procedure Act, and the associated regulations. You will also need to understand dimensional and mass limitations for abnormal load vehicles in accordance with TRH 11, implement guidelines from the Director of Public Prosecutions, manage the storage and transportation of dangerous goods, and handle traffic law enforcement equipment according to operational guidelines.

The ideal candidate will possess strong numeracy and literacy skills, effective computer proficiency, and the ability to communicate in the required language. Project management, accounting, finance and audit functions, as well as economic, financial and statistical analysis, form part of the broader competency set. Legal administration, record and resource management, customer relationship management, conflict resolution, negotiation with stakeholders, interpretation of information and legislation, evaluation of legal evidence, and conducting observations are all essential. You must be able to work effectively under pressure, work irregular hours when required, and travel regularly away from the office.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews and must submit duly completed and signed vetting and supporting documentation within the timeframe communicated by the Western Cape Government prior to the interview date. Failure to do so without reasonable justification may result in disqualification from the process. All shortlisted candidates will also undertake two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. By applying, you consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers for references, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated law enforcement professional to contribute to road safety and transport regulation in the Western Cape.
