This position offers an opportunity to take on a hands-on supervisory role within the Department of Infrastructure in the Western Cape Government, specifically focused on routine road maintenance in Region 2. Two posts are available, one based in Mossel Bay and the other in Uniondale. As a Road Worker Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day maintenance and construction of roads, ensuring that work is completed to the required standards and that all team members are effectively managed. The role sits within a public-sector environment where safety, compliance, and service delivery are paramount, and it requires a blend of practical civil construction knowledge, leadership ability, and administrative discipline.

To be considered for this role, candidates must have at least a Grade 10 qualification or an equivalent or higher level of education. A minimum of three years of semi-skilled manual work experience is required, along with a valid Code EC driving licence and a professional driving permit (PDP). Beyond these formal requirements, the department is looking for individuals who have a solid understanding of how to identify and repair defects on roads and within road reserves. Experience in operating more than one type of large construction machine is essential, as is prior exposure to supervising staff and working on civil construction activities. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary, as is the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, function well within a team, and remain self-motivated. The role also calls for competence in managing conflict and diversity within the workforce.

The main duties of the post are wide-ranging. You will supervise the maintenance and building of roads, inspect the quality of work, and provide training and guidance to workers under your charge. You will also be responsible for handling and maintaining the machinery and aids used for road maintenance and construction work. Planning and supervising maintenance and construction activities extends not only to roads but also to premises and buildings, and you will be expected to repair equipment in and to these structures as needed. A critical part of the job involves safeguarding work areas and construction machines in line with the Health and Safety Act, ensuring that all operations comply with legal and departmental safety standards. Additionally, you will be required to discipline subordinates and apply proper labour relations practices, which means you must be fair, consistent, and knowledgeable about workplace policies.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews, the submission of vetting and supporting documentation, and two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and another assessing integrity and ethical conduct. The Western Cape Government applies employment equity targets in its selection process, and reference checks will be conducted with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone with the right mix of technical experience and supervisory skill, offering the chance to contribute directly to the safety and quality of public infrastructure in the region.
