The successful candidate will work within the Emergency Centre Complex, including short stay units, and will be expected to deliver high-quality emergency care as part of the district-level package of care in the Metro East ecosystem. The role is a graded medical post, and the level of appointment will depend on the candidate’s experience after registration as a Medical Practitioner.
Applicants must hold an appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner, and must be registered with the HPCSA. For Grade 1, South African qualified employees need no experience after registration, while foreign qualified employees who are not required to perform community service need at least one year of relevant experience. Grade 2 requires a minimum of five years appropriate experience for South African qualified employees, or six years for foreign qualified employees in the same category. Grade 3 requires ten years for South African qualified employees and eleven years for foreign qualified employees. Inherent requirements include a valid driver’s licence, willingness and ability to travel, and full commuted overtime is mandatory.
The ideal candidate will have strong ethical principles, relevant clinical and counselling skills, computer literacy, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to teach and train undergraduate students and medical interns. Excellent clinical expertise, clinical governance, a team ethos, leadership, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills are also essential. Experience in Emergency Medicine at district level is required to render a high-quality service.
Duties include clinical service delivery in all areas of the Emergency Centre Complex, with relevant procedural interventions. The role also involves clinical and administrative governance, including effective self-organisation, stewardship of scarce resources, participation in clinical reviews, quality improvement, accurate medical record keeping, and compliance with human resources and other policies. The medical officer will be responsible for teaching, training and research, which includes supervising undergraduate students, interns and junior doctors, and participating in the hospital academic programme. Systems management and domain-specific outputs within the Metro East ecosystem are also key, ensuring professional and collegial care aligned with the requirements of Emergency Medicine.
Candidates who are not yet in possession of the stipulated registration requirements may also apply, provided they submit proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed fees to the relevant council on or before the day of the interview. This concession applies only to health professionals applying for the first time for registration in a specific category. No payment of any kind is required when applying for this post.
