This position is for a State Accountant specialising in Management Accounting, based at the Gert Sibande District office of the Mpumalanga Provincial government. The role sits within the broader financial management structure of the department and is central to ensuring sound budgeting, revenue administration and reporting practices. As a management accounting professional, the post holder will support the coordination of key financial portfolios and contribute to the efficient delivery of administrative services within the district. The position is graded at a level that reflects its supervisory and coordination responsibilities, and it offers an opportunity for an experienced financial professional to apply their skills in a public sector environment.
To be considered for this role, applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate as well as a three-year National Diploma in Financial or Management Accounting at NQF level 6, recognised by SAQA. In addition, a minimum of three years of working experience in financial management is required. A valid driving licence is also essential. The ideal candidate will bring a solid mix of technical and behavioural competencies, including customer service orientation, project management ability, accounting, finance and audit knowledge, information technology proficiency, financial analysis skills and people management capability. Strong numeracy, computer literacy in MS Office, language and presentation skills, research ability, and excellent verbal and written communication are also expected. The role demands interpersonal relations, flexibility, innovation, organisational ability, and the capacity to deliver results while meeting customer expectations. The successful person must adhere to principles and values, write and report effectively, present and communicate information clearly, work well with people, and perform under pressure.
The main duties of the post are varied and include assisting with the coordination of the Budgeting and Planning portfolio, which involves supporting the preparation and monitoring of budgets. The incumbent will also administer the collection of revenue and manage debtors, ensuring that income is recorded and followed up appropriately. Petty cash services will be administered in line with departmental policies. Another key responsibility is assisting in the coordination of the reporting portfolio, which means compiling and presenting financial reports as required. The role also includes arranging bookings for accommodation, likely for departmental officials or activities, and supervising the provision of administrative support services. This supervisory element means the post holder will oversee support staff and ensure that administrative functions run smoothly.
There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified documents on or before the interview date, and any foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA, with proof provided when requested. Applicants must disclose any directorship, shareholding or business dealings with an organ of state, as well as any additional remunerative work outside their normal duties. The successful candidate will be expected to enter into an Annual Performance Agreement and disclose their financial interests annually. All shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and the top candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial credits, qualifications and employment history. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. Enquiries may be directed to the named contact person at the department.
