The Senior Provincial Inspector position is a law enforcement supervisory role based in the Nkangala District of Mpumalanga, operating within the provincial inspectorate’s broader mandate to ensure road safety, public transport compliance, and the enforcement of traffic-related legislation. The incumbent will be responsible for leading a team of inspectors, providing visible policing on the roads, and ensuring that all activities align with national and provincial transport policies. This is a hands-on operational and managerial post, requiring a blend of enforcement experience, administrative capability, and the ability to mentor and develop junior personnel. The role sits within the public service’s provincial inspectorate structure and is graded at Level 07, with the successful candidate expected to contribute to the department’s strategic objectives around crime prevention, roadworthiness, and driver licensing integrity.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate and a basic traffic diploma, alongside at least three years of direct traffic law enforcement experience. A valid driving licence is essential, and candidates must have no criminal record. The role demands extensive knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, as well as practical law enforcement skills covering vehicle inspections, impoundment procedures, and the accurate completion of enforcement documentation. Strong managerial and interpersonal competencies are also required, including planning, organising, leading, controlling, and monitoring staff, managing people and customer relationships, and delivering services with a focus on quality and results. Additional skills include problem-solving, report writing, labour relations awareness, investigation techniques, motivational leadership, innovation, analytical thinking, computer literacy, and operations or project management. These competencies are critical for balancing frontline enforcement duties with administrative oversight and team development.

The core duties of the Senior Provincial Inspector involve supervising and managing subordinates while enforcing the Road Traffic Act, Public Passenger Transport legislation, and other relevant laws. The post holder will examine driver’s licences, motor vehicles, and compliance standards at driver licence testing centres, ensuring that all processes meet legal and safety requirements. Visible traffic control and policing are central to the role, as is the promotion of crime prevention activities within the district. Administrative responsibilities include managing records, completing required documentation, and performing other related tasks to support the unit’s functioning. The inspector will also assess road conditions to identify hazards or infrastructure issues that require attention. A key mentoring component involves coaching provincial inspectors who are on probation as well as those already appointed, helping them develop the practical skills and professional judgement needed for effective enforcement.

Shortlisted candidates should be aware that the selection process includes pre-entry assessments, which may cover practical exercises and integrity checks, followed by personnel suitability verification such as criminal record, citizenship, financial status, qualifications, and employment history. The successful applicant will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose any financial interests. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The position is subject to the standard public service conditions, and all applications must be submitted through the prescribed online recruitment portal, with no manual or emailed submissions accepted. This role offers an opportunity for an experienced traffic enforcement professional to take on greater responsibility, shape the performance of a district inspectorate team, and contribute meaningfully to public safety and regulatory compliance.
