This position offers an opportunity for a qualified civil engineering professional to contribute to the protection and maintenance of road infrastructure within the Mpumalanga provincial government. Based at the Head Office, the Engineering Technician (Road Protection) will operate as part of a multidisciplinary team focused on safeguarding road assets and ensuring that infrastructure projects meet technical, safety, and environmental standards. The role is graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) and forms part of a broader departmental effort to implement road protection policies, monitor contract performance, and support the delivery of durable and compliant roadworks. With two posts available, the successful candidates will be expected to work closely with engineers, contractors, and various stakeholders to ensure that projects are executed effectively and in line with statutory requirements.
Candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate and a National Diploma in Civil Engineering at NQF Level 6, along with compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Technician (Pr. Technic). Relevant practical experience is required, together with a solid foundation in technical investigation, site surveying, and design support for road protection and infrastructure projects. The role demands proficiency in measuring, inspecting, and estimating quantities and materials, as well as monitoring contracts and preparing technical reports that confirm compliance with departmental and legislative frameworks. A sound knowledge of relevant legislation, safety protocols, and quality standards in road infrastructure protection is essential. The ability to maintain accurate technical records, use technical instruments and computer software, and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary environment is also critical to success in this position.
The core duties of the Engineering Technician involve conducting technical surveys and inspections of road protection and infrastructure assets, supporting the preparation of designs, measurements, and cost estimates, and monitoring the execution of contracts and maintenance work to ensure adherence to specifications. The incumbent will be responsible for updating technical records, inspection reports, and as-built documentation, while liaising with engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to facilitate smooth project delivery. Ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and environmental requirements on all assigned projects is a key responsibility, as is assisting with the implementation of departmental road protection policies and procedures. The role therefore combines fieldwork, documentation, and stakeholder coordination to support the long-term resilience of the province’s road network.
Shortlisted candidates should be aware of several important conditions attached to the recruitment process. Certified copies of documents will be required from those invited for interviews, and applicants with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by SAQA and provide proof of such evaluation if shortlisted. Candidates must also disclose any directorship, shareholding, or business dealings with an organ of state, as well as any additional remunerative work outside their normal duties. The selection process may include practical exercises, integrity assessments, and personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial standing, qualifications, and employment history. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and disclose financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted; those who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
