This position offers an opportunity for a qualified civil engineering technician to contribute to road maintenance operations within a provincial government department in Mpumalanga. Based at the Head Office, the Engineering Technician Production Grade A (Road Maintenance) forms part of the technical team responsible for ensuring that road infrastructure is properly surveyed, inspected, designed, measured and monitored. The role is graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) and requires a blend of field work and office-based technical reporting.

To be considered, applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate and a National Diploma in Civil Engineering at NQF Level 6, together with compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Technician (Pr. Technic). Relevant experience is required, and candidates must demonstrate knowledge and skills in technical investigation, surveying, design support, measurement, inspection, estimating, contract monitoring and technical reporting. These competencies are central to the day-to-day responsibilities of the post.

The main duties of the role include conducting technical surveys and inspections of road maintenance projects, preparing designs, measurements and estimates, monitoring contracts to ensure compliance and progress, and maintaining accurate technical records and reports. The technician will therefore be expected to work both on site and in the office, liaising with contractors and providing the technical information needed to support decision-making and project delivery.

There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. Applications are only accepted through the provincial e-recruitment portal, and no manual, emailed or faxed submissions will be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their documents on or before the day of the interview, and any foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), with proof of evaluation provided when requested. Applicants must also disclose whether they are a director or shareholder of a company conducting business with an organ of state, and whether they perform any additional remunerative work outside their normal duties. The department will verify prior employment for public service applicants as part of the appointment process.

Shortlisted candidates must be available for interviews at a date, time and place determined by the department. All shortlisted candidates will undertake pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise to test technical and generic suitability and an integrity assessment. The top two candidates will then be subjected to personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial credits and assets, qualification verification and employment background or reference checks. The successful candidate will be required to enter into an annual performance agreement and to disclose their financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should accept that their application was unsuccessful.
