The Communication Officer for Community and Intra-Departmental Liaison is a full-time position based at the Head Office in Mbombela, within the provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism. This role sits at the intersection of public engagement and internal coordination, ensuring that the department communicates effectively with communities, stakeholders, and its own constituent entities. The officer will be responsible for maintaining the department’s public image, supporting participatory programmes, and facilitating the smooth flow of information both outward to the public and inward across departmental units. This is a level 08 post, and the successful candidate will be expected to operate in a dynamic environment where responsiveness, professionalism, and adherence to government communication standards are essential.
Applicants must hold an appropriate SAQA-recognised qualification at NQF level 6 in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, or Public Relations, complemented by at least two years of relevant work experience in a communication environment. A valid driver’s licence is required, as the role involves extensive travel to meet tight deadlines. The department is looking for someone who can work under pressure and is prepared to work irregular hours, including weekends and public holidays, when necessary. The ideal candidate will have a sound understanding of the department’s mandate in relation to applicable legislation, prescripts, and regulations, as well as a strong grasp of government corporate ethos and values. Key competencies include multi-tasking, public relations, project management, time management, prioritisation, a proactive approach, excellent written and verbal communication, and meticulous attention to detail. High-level computer literacy across various software programmes is also essential.
The duties are broad and varied. The officer will regularly update the stakeholder database and coordinate the compilation of the departmental calendar of events. They will assist in coordinating public participation programmes and campaigns, manage all departmental exhibitions, and produce content for both internal and external publications. Developing content for promotional material, disseminating information through departmental social media platforms, and interacting with stakeholders online are also central responsibilities. In addition, the role includes rendering branding and photography services, liaising closely with departmental public entities and other stakeholders, compiling and submitting required reports, and providing general administrative support. The officer may also be directed to perform any other relevant duties as needed.
Shortlisted candidates should be aware of several conditions attached to the appointment process. They will be required to submit certified documents before interviews, and any foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA, with proof provided if shortlisted. Applicants must disclose any directorship or shareholding in companies doing business with the state, as well as any additional remunerative work outside their normal duties. The department will conduct interviews at a time and place it determines, and all shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. The top two candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, financial status, qualifications, and employment history. The successful candidate will enter into an annual performance agreement and must disclose financial interests annually. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted; those who do not hear within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
