This position offers four opportunities for qualified radiation oncology radiographers, also known as radiotherapists, to join the eThekwini Oncology complex, which operates across Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and Addington Hospital. The role sits within a busy public-sector oncology environment in KwaZulu-Natal, where the successful candidates will work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering radiotherapy services to patients. The post is structured according to a graded occupational dispensation, with progression based on experience and service, and includes standard benefits such as a 13th cheque, with medical aid and housing allowances available to those who meet the prescribed requirements.
Applicants must hold a diploma or bachelor’s degree in radiography and be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a radiographer in radiotherapy oncology, with current registration maintained. The role demands a solid working knowledge of standard radiotherapy techniques, dose protocols, and the equipment and accessories associated with both routine and specialised treatment methods. Familiarity with basic quality assurance in radiotherapy, radiation effects, and patient radiation protection is essential. A sound understanding of anatomy, tumour treatment, and the physiological effects on patient care patterns is also required. The ability to take and evaluate portal images, CT scans, and MRI scans for treatment planning purposes is a key competency, as is knowledge of radiotherapy planning. Strong interpersonal skills, basic supervisory ability, effective teamwork, and knowledge of basic patient care round out the required profile.
The core duties involve undertaking all basic radiation planning and treatment preparation, including tumour localisation, graphic planning, radiation dose calculation, and preparing the data needed for treatment accessory construction. The radiographer will also undertake brachytherapy planning and treatment procedures, liaising closely with physicists, oncologists, oncology nurses, patients, and their relatives. Responsibilities include safely operating, caring for, and constructing accessories and immobilisation devices used in planning and treatment, performing dosimetry checks before treatment delivery, and ensuring accurate records are kept of every course of radiotherapy delivered. The post also requires serving as a Health and Safety Representative and being available for after-hours duties, with rotation between the two hospital radiotherapy departments as needed.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, both of which will be scored as additional criteria during the interview process. Applications must be submitted using the current Z83 form along with a detailed CV; certified copies of qualifications and registration are only required from shortlisted candidates, who must also provide an original signed letter from their current employer confirming relevant work experience. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA before the interview. Pre-employment screening and verification, including a CIPC check, will be conducted. The hospital is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages people with disabilities and African males to apply, while all race groups remain eligible.
