This position offers a three-year fixed-term contract as a Candidate Scientific Technician within the Agricultural Crop Research Services unit, based at the Cedara Research Station. The role is an entry-level scientific post designed for a recently qualified individual who wishes to build a career in agricultural research and development. As a candidate technician, the incumbent will work under the guidance of senior scientific staff, contributing to the practical implementation of crop research projects and supporting the broader objectives of the department in improving agricultural productivity and sustainability. The post is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for scientific technicians, reflecting its professional scientific nature.

To be considered for this role, applicants must hold an NQF level 6 Diploma in Plant or Crop Production. In addition, compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Candidate Certificated Natural Scientist is required, along with a valid driver’s licence. No prior work experience is required, making this an ideal opportunity for a recent graduate. However, candidates must demonstrate a sound knowledge of scientific methodologies, research and development principles, and legal compliance within a scientific context. A range of skills is also expected, including computer-aided scientific applications, technical report writing, decision-making, analytical thinking, creativity, self-management, customer focus, effective communication, computer literacy, planning and organising, conflict management, and problem-solving.

The main duties of the post involve assisting with the implementation of methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures within the research environment. The technician will provide technical support and offer recommendations or advice to support research activities. A key responsibility is assisting in the development of databases, managing data, and performing subsequent analysis to support research outcomes. The role also includes conducting research and development activities, which may involve field trials, laboratory work, data collection, and reporting. Additionally, the incumbent will assist with administrative and related functions to ensure the smooth operation of the research unit.

This post is subject to standard public service recruitment conditions. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability, as well as an integrity assessment. Applicants must ensure their applications are fully completed and submitted in accordance with the advertised instructions, as late or incomplete applications will be disqualified. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The department encourages applications from all eligible individuals, and the selection process will be conducted in line with the department’s employment equity objectives. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful. This is a valuable opportunity for a motivated graduate to gain hands-on experience in agricultural crop research while contributing to the scientific capacity of the province.
