This position offers an opportunity for a qualified scientific professional to join the analytical services team at Cedara Research Station as a Scientific Technician, graded at Level A, B, or C depending on experience and qualifications. The role sits within the soil laboratory environment and is focused on providing high-quality analytical support for agricultural science. The successful candidate will be one of three appointees, all working to ensure that the laboratory operates in line with rigorous scientific standards and regulatory requirements. This is a technical post that requires a blend of practical laboratory expertise, scientific knowledge, and the ability to contribute to the broader research and development goals of the department.

Applicants must hold an NQF Level 6 Diploma in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry, or an equivalent qualification. Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Certificated Natural Scientist in the field of Agricultural Science is required, along with a valid driver’s licence. In addition, candidates need at least three years of post-qualification technical experience working in analytical laboratories. A thorough understanding of relevant legislation and standards is essential, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, ISO 17025, the Labour Relations Act, the Public Service Act and Regulations, and departmental human resource policies. The role also demands strong technical skills such as programme and project management, scientific methodologies, computer-aided scientific applications, data analysis, technical report writing, and professional judgement. Generic competencies include decision making, team leadership, communication, people management, planning, problem solving, and customer focus.

The core duties involve developing and implementing methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures for the laboratory. The incumbent will perform technical scientific analysis and regulatory functions, ensuring that all work meets quality control and calibration standards. Providing technical support and advice to colleagues and stakeholders is a key part of the role, as is participating in research and development initiatives. The position also carries responsibility for human capital development, which may include mentoring and guiding junior staff or contributing to the professional growth of the team. The work is based at Cedara Research Station, a well-known agricultural research facility, and the post is structured according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for scientific technicians.

Candidates should note that this is a public service position with specific conditions attached. Shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) at the applicant’s own responsibility. Manual applications must be submitted on the prescribed Z83 form, which must be fully completed, signed, and initialled, and accompanied by a comprehensive CV. Certified copies of qualifications and supporting documents are only required from shortlisted candidates, to be submitted on or before the day of the interview. The department encourages applicants to make use of the online e-Recruitment system or designated online application centres for assistance. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. This is a demanding but rewarding role for a dedicated scientific professional looking to contribute to agricultural research and laboratory excellence in the public sector.
