ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN GRADE A/B/C (X9 POSTS)

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government is advertising nine Engineering Technician positions at Grade A, B, or C under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD). These posts are spread across several district offices, including iLembe, Ugu, Harry Gwala, uThukela, uMzinyathi, uMkhanyakude, and Zululand, with two reference numbers covering different clusters of districts. The role is ideal for qualified engineering professionals who wish to apply their technical expertise in a public service environment, supporting infrastructure and agricultural engineering projects at district level.

The successful candidate will render technical services to the district, providing hands-on assistance in the implementation of engineering projects. This includes offering technical advice and guidance to colleagues and stakeholders, undertaking research and development activities, and performing administrative and related functions. The work requires a solid understanding of legal compliance, engineering norms and standards, technical design and analysis, and computer-aided engineering applications. The technician will be expected to produce technical reports, manage project components, and work effectively within a team while maintaining a strong customer focus.

To be considered, applicants must hold an NQF Level 6 National Diploma in Agricultural Engineering or Civil Engineering, and must be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as an Engineering Technician. A valid driver's licence is essential. In addition, candidates need at least three years of post-qualification technical engineering experience. The role demands a combination of technical and generic skills, including project management, technical design and analysis, research and development, computer-aided engineering applications, technical report writing, and technical consulting. Generic competencies such as problem solving, decision making, teamwork, creativity, customer focus, communication, computer literacy, people management, planning and organising, and change management are also required.

There are several important conditions attached to these posts. Manual applicants must use the new Z83 application form, which has been effective since 1 January 2021, and must ensure it is fully completed, signed, and initialled. A comprehensive CV must accompany the application. Only shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit certified copies of qualifications and other supporting documents, and these must be produced on or before the day of the interview. Applicants with foreign qualifications are responsible for having them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). All shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine suitability based on the technical and generic requirements of the post, and one integrity assessment to evaluate ethical conduct.
