This position offers an exciting opportunity for a qualified and experienced scientist to contribute to agricultural research and development within the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government. Based at the Kokstad Research Station, the successful candidate will operate as a Professional Scientist at Grade A, B, or C, depending on experience and qualifications, within the specialised field of rangeland ecology and management, also referred to as pasture science. The role is central to supporting sustainable land use, livestock production, and the conservation of natural grazing resources, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based research and the practical application of scientific knowledge in a real-world agricultural context.

Applicants must hold an NQF level 08 four-year Agricultural Science degree, specifically an Honours-level BSc, with majors in Rangeland Ecology and Management or Pasture Science. Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist is required, along with a valid driver’s licence. A minimum of three years of post-qualification experience in the relevant discipline is essential. The ideal candidate will possess a sound understanding of agricultural research methodologies and the practical techniques used in rangeland and pasture management. Familiarity with key legislative frameworks, including the Labour Relations Act, Public Service Act, Public Administration Management Act, and related regulations and directives, is also necessary. Strong technical and interpersonal skills are expected, including planning, organising, team leadership, analytical thinking, problem solving, decision making, change management, communication, computer literacy, networking, and the ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.

The core duties of the role are multifaceted. The scientist will be responsible for developing and implementing methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures relevant to rangeland ecology and pasture science. This includes performing scientific analysis and regulatory functions, as well as conducting research and development projects that address practical challenges in the sector. Human capital development is another key responsibility, meaning the post holder may be involved in mentoring, training, or supporting junior staff and students. Administrative and related functions, such as reporting, record keeping, and ensuring compliance with departmental policies, will also form part of the daily work.

This is a senior scientific post within the public service, and as such, there are important conditions attached to the appointment. The remuneration is an all-inclusive Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) package, reflecting the professional nature of the role. Candidates should note that the selection process includes pre-entry assessments for shortlisted individuals, covering both technical suitability and ethical conduct. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The department is committed to upholding public service professionalism and equity principles, and all applications are subject to strict verification and vetting procedures. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated scientist looking to make a meaningful impact on rangeland management and agricultural sustainability in South Africa.
