This vacancy offers three posts for a Staff Nurse within the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, under the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport. The role is a clinical nursing position focused on supporting professional nurses and delivering frontline healthcare services, particularly in the areas of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, and COVID-19. Successful candidates will be placed in a district setting and will be expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team while also being able to function independently. The position requires a willingness to travel extensively, as services may be delivered across multiple facilities or outreach points within the district.
Applicants must be Enrolled Nurses registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and must hold current registration for the 2026/2027 period. The post is structured into three grades based on experience. Grade 1 is open to candidates with no prior nursing experience after registration. Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as an Enrolled Nurse. Grade 3 requires a minimum of twenty years of such experience. Beyond formal experience, the role demands strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work well within a team, and the capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines. A sound knowledge of relevant policies, HIV/AIDS management protocols, and all treatment guidelines is essential, as is appropriate experience in managing HIV treatment. Confidentiality is a critical requirement given the sensitive nature of patient information.
The core duties of the position are broad and patient-centred. The nurse will provide health education to patients accessing care, measure, interpret, and record vital signs, and operate all relevant apparatus and equipment. A key responsibility is providing treatment literacy to clients on chronic medication to enhance adherence. The nurse will also offer quality HIV counselling and testing services on site, including HIV self-screening and index testing, and provide screening for TB, STIs, and COVID-19. The role involves assisting professional nurses with clinical procedures and preparing patients for diagnostic and surgical procedures. In addition, the nurse is expected to ensure the effective utilisation of resources, including ordering stock and equipment in a cost-effective manner and immediately reporting any lost or damaged resources. Maintaining professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development is also required, along with adherence to the code of conduct as prescribed by the Public Service and the professional body. The nurse must also maintain quality data management in line with standard operating procedures.
Candidates should note several important conditions attached to this post. Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form accompanied by a comprehensive CV, and only shortlisted candidates will be asked to produce certified copies of qualifications and other documents. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Dual citizenship holders must provide a police clearance certificate from their country of origin when shortlisted, and non-South African citizens must submit proof of permanent residence. Successful candidates will be subjected to personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, financial, qualification, citizenship, reference, and employment verification. They will also be required to undergo a security clearance and enter into an employment contract and performance agreement within three months of appointment. Shortlisted candidates will undertake pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. The department reserves the right not to make any appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only.
