This advertisement is for two Artisan Production posts at Boitumelo Regional Hospital, one for an electrician and one for a carpenter. The positions fall within the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, and are based at the hospital’s facilities. As an artisan production worker, the successful candidates will be responsible for producing, repairing, maintaining and quality-assuring a range of objects, equipment and machinery within the facility. The role is hands-on and technical, requiring a sound understanding of production processes, safety standards and maintenance planning. The incumbents will also be expected to supervise and mentor junior staff, keep accurate records and contribute to the operational plan of the unit.
To be considered, applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification, and no prior work experience is required. However, they must hold an appropriate trade test certificate in the relevant trade, issued in terms of the Manpower Act, 1981, as amended — either through a completed apprenticeship and passing a trade test under Section 13(2)(h), or a certificate issued under Sections 28 or 30, or the repealed Section 27 of that Act. In addition, candidates need knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act No. 85 of 1993), computer literacy, excellent time management, strong written and verbal communication, good interpersonal skills and report-writing ability. These competencies are essential for working safely and effectively alongside colleagues and other departments.
The main duties include producing designs according to client specifications and within production capability, manufacturing objects using materials and equipment according to job specifications and recognised standards, and performing quality assurance on all produced items. The artisans will also inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, repair defects, test and repair machinery in line with specifications, and service equipment according to the maintenance plan schedule. They must quality assure serviced and maintained equipment, compile and submit reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, and keep and maintain job records or registers. Supervision and mentoring of staff is also part of the role, as is continuous individual development to keep up with new technologies and procedures.
Applicants should note the special conditions attached to these posts. All applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form, accompanied by a comprehensive CV, and only shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide certified copies of qualifications and other documents. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and dual citizens or non-SA citizens may be required to submit police clearance or permanent residence proof. Successful candidates will undergo a personnel suitability check, including criminal record, financial, qualification, citizenship, reference and employment verification. They will also be expected to enter into an employment contract and performance agreement within three months of appointment, undergo a security clearance, and complete pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates. These posts are advertised as part of a circular, and the salary package includes benefits such as a 13th cheque, housing allowance and optional medical aid, subject to prescribed requirements.
