This vacancy is for a Professional Nurse Specialty in Theatre, offering two posts at Thusanong District Hospital. The role sits within the broader public health nursing framework and requires a practitioner who is registered with the South African Nursing Council and holds a post-basic qualification in Advanced Theatre Technique. The position is graded under the nursing OSD structure, and the successful candidates will be expected to deliver specialised perioperative nursing care in accordance with the legal, ethical and professional standards governing nursing practice in South Africa.

Applicants must have a Senior Certificate (Matric) and a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing that allows registration as a Registered Nurse in General Nursing. In addition, a one-year post-basic nursing qualification in Advanced Theatre Technique, accredited by the South African Nursing Council, is required. Current registration with SANC for the 2026/2027 period is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse is required. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience, of which at least ten years must be in the specific theatre specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. The role demands good communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work under pressure, and computer literacy.

The duties of the post are broad and patient-centred. The professional nurse will demonstrate an understanding of nursing legislation and related legal and ethical practices, and perform clinical nursing in line with the scope of practice and standards set by the facility. The incumbent must promote quality nursing care, communicate effectively with patients, supervisors and other clinicians, and produce accurate report writing when required. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team is central to the role, as is the ability to work co-operatively with people from diverse intellectual, cultural, racial or religious backgrounds. The nurse must be able to plan and organise their own work and supervise support personnel to ensure proper nursing care. A concern for patients is essential, including advocating proper treatment and care and responding to patients’ needs, requirements and expectations in line with the Batho Pele principles.

Candidates should note that this is a government post with specific application conditions. The selection process includes personnel suitability checks such as criminal record, financial, qualification verification, citizenship, reference and employment verification. Shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. Successful appointees will be expected to enter into an employment contract and performance agreement, and may undergo security clearance. Applicants with foreign qualifications must provide a SAQA evaluation certificate, and non-South African citizens must submit proof of permanent residence when shortlisted. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates. As with all public service vacancies, applicants must complete the application form fully and comply with the instructions in the advertisement to avoid disqualification.
