This is a senior nursing management position within the Primary Health Care stream, with two vacancies based in the Thabo Mofutsanyn district — one at Mantsopa Local Area and one at Setsoto Local Area. The successful candidates will operate as Assistant Manager Nursing at PNB4 level, taking responsibility for the overall coordination and supervision of nursing services in their respective local areas. The role is demanding and requires a blend of clinical expertise, leadership, and administrative capability to ensure the delivery of effective and efficient patient care.
Applicants must hold a diploma or degree in nursing that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC), and must be registered for the 2026/2027 period as a Registered Nurse in General Nursing. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in Primary Health Care, accredited by SANC and lasting at least one year, is required. The experience requirement is substantial: at least ten years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse, of which at least six years must have been gained after obtaining the post-basic Primary Health Care qualification, and at least three years must have been at a management level. Proof of this working experience must be endorsed by Human Resources. A valid driver's licence is also essential, as the role involves extensive travel and working extra hours.
Key duties include delegating, supervising and coordinating patient care to ensure adequate nursing care is provided; initiating and participating in health promotion activities to communicate accurate and comprehensive health information; and developing constructive working relationships with nursing and other stakeholders through inter-professional, inter-sectoral and multi-disciplinary teamwork. The post holder will also participate in the analysis, formulation and implementation of nursing guidelines, practices, standards and procedures. Human resource management is a core responsibility, as is monitoring and ensuring the proper utilisation of financial and physical resources. The ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and analyse data quality assessments is essential, along with strong communication, management, leadership and teamwork skills, computer literacy, and sound financial management.
These positions are subject to the department's recruitment and selection processes. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and successful appointees must enter into an employment contract and performance agreement within three months of appointment, as well as undergo a security clearance. The department also applies personnel suitability checks, covering criminal record, financial, qualification, citizenship, reference and employment verification. Candidates with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by SAQA, and non-South African citizens must provide proof of permanent residence when shortlisted. The department reserves the right not to fill the posts. Given the seniority and the nature of the work, applicants should be prepared for a rigorous selection process and a role that demands resilience, professionalism and a strong commitment to public health service delivery.
