This vacancy is for a qualified Pharmacist to join the pharmaceutical services team at John Daniel Newberry District Hospital, a public sector healthcare facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive, professional and quality pharmaceutical service to patients, clinics and the broader hospital environment, in line with relevant legislation, standard operating procedures and the Batho Pele principles. The role is an OSD-graded position within the public service, offering a structured career path with entry-level, experienced and senior grades depending on years of registration with the South African Pharmacy Council.
Applicants must have a Matric certificate and an appropriate Bachelor of Pharmacy degree that allows registration with the South African Pharmacy Council, along with current registration with the SAPC. For the entry grade, no post-registration experience is required for South African qualified pharmacists, while foreign qualified applicants need one year of relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign health professional council, unless exempt from community service. The higher grades require a minimum of five years and thirteen years of experience respectively after SAPC registration. In addition to formal qualifications, candidates need sound knowledge of health and safety policies, the Patient Rights Charter, Batho Pele principles, infection control policies, and good pharmacy practice. Strong problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, planning and computer literacy skills are essential.
The duties are broad and include rendering a full pharmaceutical service, dispensing medication to patients and clinics, managing and controlling medicine stock, calculating stock levels, controlling expired medication, and maintaining drug registers for scheduled substances and donations. The pharmacist will also ensure compliance with national core standards, compile risk assessments and action plans to reduce risk in the pharmacy, keep statistics and reports, and manage pharmaceutical addendums. Training and supervision of pharmacy assistants, interns and other support personnel form a key part of the role, as does adherence to good pharmacy practice rules and regulations.
The post is based at John Daniel Newberry District Hospital. Interested applicants must complete the new Z83 application form and submit a comprehensive CV, with shortlisted candidates required to produce certified copies of qualifications and other documents before the interview. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and non-South African citizens must provide proof of permanent residence when shortlisted. Successful candidates will be required to enter into an employment contract and performance agreement, undergo a security clearance, and complete pre-entry assessments including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. Applications that are late, incomplete, or submitted on the old Z83 form will not be considered. The department reserves the right not to fill the post.
