The Department of Water and Sanitation, through its National Hydrological Services and the Geohydrological Assessment and Monitoring sub-division, is seeking a Chief Assistant Technical Officer for Scientific Support at its Pretoria Head Office. This role sits within the Water Resources Management branch and is central to supporting the technical work of geohydrologists and scientists. The incumbent will be responsible for providing hands-on support in geohydrological assessments, including the collection of groundwater quality samples and groundwater level data. The position requires a strong technical background in water-related data collection and processing, and the successful candidate will work as part of a team dedicated to understanding and monitoring South Africa's groundwater resources.

To be considered, applicants must have an NQF level 4 qualification, namely a Senior Certificate or Grade 12, with Mathematics, Mathematics Literacy, or Physical Science. In addition, the role requires between six and ten years of practical experience in a surface or groundwater technical environment, specifically in collecting and processing water-related data. A valid, unexpired Code 10 driver's licence and a Professional Driving Permit are mandatory, as the job involves extensive travel and fieldwork. The ideal candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, be computer literate, and possess a high level of knowledge of geohydrological processes and systems. Familiarity with laboratory and monitoring equipment, as well as knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements, is also essential.

The duties are varied and include supporting technicians and scientists in executing their tasks, with a strong emphasis on quality control. The successful candidate will provide on-the-job training in scientific data collection processes, contribute to training materials for both data collection and data processing, and deliver internal and external training in relevant fields of expertise. They will guide data collectors in applying correct data collection methods, assist with fault correction and equipment calibration, and provide monthly feedback on the success or failure of training interventions. The role also carries supervisory responsibilities, overseeing subordinates involved in data collection and processing activities. Extensive travel is a core feature of the position, with the official expected to remain in the field for extended periods, working away from the office.

This is a level 07 position within the Department of Water and Sanitation, which is an equal opportunity employer. Employment equity objectives, as outlined in the Constitution and the Employment Equity Act, will be taken into account, with preference given to EE targets. Women and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates will be subject to suitability checks, including SAQA verification, reference checks, and criminal and credit checks. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate when shortlisted, and foreign nationals or dual citizenship holders must provide a police clearance certificate from their country of origin. All shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and may be required to complete a financial disclosure form and undergo security clearance. Applications must be submitted online, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted; if no response is received within three months, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to fill the post.
