This vacancy is for a Control Engineering Technician Grade A within the Department of Water and Sanitation, based in Mbombela under the Mpumalanga Provincial Operations, specifically in the Water Services Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Programmes. The role forms part of the broader Water and Sanitation Services Management branch and is an OSD-graded technical position. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of water supply and sanitation services infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on managing grants and programmes that fund municipal infrastructure projects.

To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and have at least six years of post-qualification technical engineering supervisory experience in water or sanitation related infrastructure. Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineering Technician is required, along with a valid unexpired driver's licence. The role demands sound knowledge of water legislation and related policies, proficiency in MS Office software, and strong planning, organising, problem-solving, communication, conflict resolution, interpersonal, and programme and project management skills.

The core duties include managing the water supply and sanitation services infrastructure grants and programmes, particularly the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant and Water Services Infrastructure Grant. The technician will manage infrastructure development projects funded through these grants, provide project implementation support to Water Services Authorities, and deliver technical engineering support services. Additional responsibilities include consolidating inputs into the technical and engineering operation plan, ensuring the development, implementation and maintenance of databases, managing and supervising technical personnel and assets, and liaising with relevant bodies and councils on engineering matters.

When applying, candidates must complete all compulsory fields on the online Z83 form, particularly those relating to professional or occupational registration, as failure to do so will result in disqualification. Shortlisted candidates will need to produce original documents and will be subjected to suitability checks, including SAQA verification, reference checks, and criminal and credit checks. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and foreign nationals or dual citizenship holders must provide a police clearance certificate from their country of origin. All shortlisted candidates will also undertake two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise to determine suitability based on the post's technical and generic requirements, and an integrity assessment. Candidates may also be required to complete a financial disclosure form and undergo security clearance. The department is an equal opportunity employer and encourages women and persons with disabilities to apply, with preference given to employment equity targets. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and if no feedback is received within three months, applicants should accept that their application was unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to fill the post. Applications must be submitted online; faxed and late applications will not be considered.
