This position offers an opportunity for a qualified natural scientist to contribute directly to the sustainable management of South Africa’s small pelagic fish resources. Based in Cape Town at the Foretrust Building, the role sits within the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, where the successful candidate will work as a Scientist Production Grade A. The post is an OSD-graded scientific role, focused on generating the evidence base needed to support responsible fisheries governance. The work combines hands-on research at sea, quantitative analysis, and engagement with a range of stakeholders, all aimed at ensuring that small pelagic fish stocks are utilised optimally while remaining healthy for future generations.

Candidates must hold a BSc Honours degree in Natural Science at NQF Level 8, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority, together with at least three years of relevant scientific experience gained after completing the BSc. Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions as a Professional Natural Scientist is required. The role demands a solid theoretical and practical grounding in fisheries and biological research, particularly regarding small pelagic fish species and their sustainable management. Applicants should be familiar with scientific methodologies and models, research and development processes, and data analysis and statistics with a strong quantitative focus. Practical proficiency in the MS Access database environment and the statistical programming language R is essential, as is a proven ability to carry out quantitative analyses. Additional competencies include programme and project management, decision making, team leadership, communication, planning and organising, and computer literacy.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research on pelagic fish species, undertake research surveys at sea, contribute to stock assessments, and provide scientific advice that supports both optimal resource utilisation and sustainable fisheries management. The role involves developing and implementing methodologies, policies, systems and procedures, as well as identifying research gaps and designing appropriate scientific interventions. Active participation in Scientific Working Groups is required, providing scientific inputs into fisheries management and policy development. The scientist will also engage with fisheries managers, industry representatives, research institutions and other stakeholders, perform scientific analysis and regulatory functions, and contribute to human capital development. Strong report writing skills are necessary, including the ability to produce peer-reviewed scientific papers and reviews, and to submit documents to local and international forums within tight timeframes. The ability to work under extreme pressure, both independently and as part of a team, is essential, along with a willingness to spend time working at sea.

The Department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and preference may be given to appointable applicants from underrepresented designated groups in line with its equity plan. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates will be required to produce certified copies of their qualifications, identity document and driver’s licence before the interview, and foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. All shortlisted applicants will undergo screening and security vetting, which may include criminal record checks, citizenship status verification, creditworthiness assessment, reference checking and qualification verification. Correspondence is limited to successful candidates, and applicants who have not been contacted within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. By submitting an application, candidates consent to the processing of their personal information for recruitment purposes in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act. Applications must be submitted online through the department’s recruitment portal.
