The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service is offering a 24-month internship opportunity in Internal Communication, based in Pretoria, as part of its 2026/2028 Internship Programme for unemployed South African graduates. This role is designed to give a recent graduate practical workplace experience within a government department, specifically within the communication environment of the Secretariat. The successful candidate will work as an Internal Communication intern, contributing to the flow of information within the organisation. Given the required qualification in Graphic Design, the role will centre on producing visually engaging communication materials that support internal messaging, staff engagement, and the overall communication strategy of the department. The intern will be expected to apply their design skills to create content that is clear, professional, and aligned with the Secretariat’s identity and the broader public service standards.
To be considered for this position, applicants must possess a completed National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from an accredited institution of higher learning. The programme is strictly for graduates who are currently unemployed and who have not previously participated in an internship programme within the Public Service. While no prior work experience is explicitly required, candidates should be able to demonstrate their design capabilities through their academic record and any practical projects undertaken during their studies. The department will verify that qualifications come from recognised institutions, and only shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide certified copies of their documents ahead of the interview stage.
The main duties of the Internal Communication intern will involve supporting the communication unit in developing and distributing internal communication materials. This is likely to include designing newsletters, notices, posters, presentations, and digital content for internal platforms such as the intranet. The intern may also assist with drafting and editing internal messages, helping to coordinate communication campaigns, and ensuring that all visual materials are consistent with departmental branding and guidelines. Working closely with communication officers and other staff, the intern will gain hands-on experience in corporate communication within the public sector, learning how to manage information flow in a structured and accountable environment. The role offers a valuable opportunity to build a professional portfolio while contributing to the effective functioning of the Secretariat.
Applications must be submitted on the new prescribed Z83 form, which is obtainable from any Public Service department or the Public Service and Administration website, together with a detailed curriculum vitae that clearly outlines positions held, dates, and key performance areas. Copies of qualifications and other supporting documents are not required at the initial application stage; only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified documents on or before the day of the interview. Failure to submit the required information will result in disqualification. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and applicants who do not receive feedback within a month after the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful.
The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service is committed to employment equity, and candidates whose appointment promotes representativity in terms of race, gender, and disability will receive preference. The internship is a non-renewable contract for a period of twenty-four months, and a monthly stipend is provided. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for a graphic design graduate seeking to develop practical skills in internal communication within a government setting. The position is based in Pretoria, and interested applicants are encouraged to review the full advertisement for further details on the application process and contact information.
