The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service is offering a 24-month internship opportunity for an Intern in Civilian Oversight Monitoring and Evaluation, based in Pretoria. This role sits within the Secretariat’s broader mandate to provide independent civilian oversight of the South African Police Service, ensuring transparency, accountability and effectiveness in policing. The intern will be exposed to the monitoring and evaluation functions of the Secretariat, assisting with the collection and analysis of information related to police conduct and performance, supporting the preparation of oversight reports, and contributing to the development and refinement of monitoring tools and indicators. The position is ideal for a recent graduate seeking practical experience in public sector governance, policy implementation and police accountability mechanisms.

To be considered, applicants must hold a completed National Diploma or Degree in Forensic Investigation from an accredited institution of higher learning. This specialised qualification is essential because the work involves examining investigative processes, identifying gaps or irregularities in police investigations, and supporting the Secretariat’s oversight of forensic and investigative standards. Candidates must be unemployed South African graduates and must not have previously participated in an internship programme in the Public Service. The programme is structured as a non-renewable contract for 24 months, offering a monthly stipend.

Key responsibilities will include assisting with the monitoring and evaluation of civilian oversight cases, capturing and verifying data from various sources, drafting reports and submissions, liaising with internal and external stakeholders, and performing administrative duties related to the unit’s workflow. The intern will also support the unit in tracking recommendations and follow-up actions arising from oversight findings, thereby contributing to the Secretariat’s efforts to strengthen police accountability. Training and mentorship will be provided to help the intern develop competencies in research, analysis, report writing and public service ethics.

Preference will be given to candidates whose appointment promotes representativity in terms of race, gender and disability, in line with the Employment Equity framework. Shortlisted applicants will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and other relevant documents before the interview. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only, and applicants who do not receive feedback within one month after the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful. This internship offers a valuable opportunity for a forensic investigation graduate to contribute to meaningful oversight work while gaining hands-on experience in the public sector.
