This position offers a 24-month developmental internship opportunity within the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, based at the Sekhukhune District Office. The successful candidate will be appointed as an Accounting Clerk specialising in expenditure and accounts, gaining hands-on workplace experience in a government financial environment. The post is part of the Provincial Department’s Graduate Internship Programme, aimed at unemployed South African youth who have not previously participated in any Public Service graduate internship. While the role is structured as a clerical accounting position, it serves as a practical workplace-learning placement, with a monthly stipend paid in line with the Department of Public Service and Administration’s directive on developmental programmes.
Applicants must hold a Matric certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 4, recognised by SAQA. Beyond the formal qualification, the role demands a solid set of practical skills and knowledge. Candidates should possess good communication and listening abilities, sound interpersonal relations, and the capacity to work under pressure. Problem analysis, analytical thinking, honesty, confidentiality, and customer care skills are essential. A working knowledge of the PERSAL and BAS financial systems is required, along with basic financial management skills and an understanding of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and Batho Pele principles. Filing and records management skills are also necessary, as is computer literacy in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
The core duties of the Accounting Clerk revolve around the accurate processing and recording of financial transactions. The incumbent will be responsible for archiving payment vouchers, processing and handling payment enquiries, and attending to client queries related to payments. The role also involves assisting with creditors’ reconciliations, receiving goods on the system after they have been manually received, maintaining the payment register, and updating all relevant registers on a daily basis. These tasks require close attention to detail, a methodical approach, and the ability to work with financial data while maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a security clearance, verification of qualifications, and a personnel suitability check. They will also be expected to complete two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability for the post, and an integrity assessment. Certified copies of the identity document, Grade 12 certificate, and any other required qualifications must be submitted by shortlisted candidates before the interview. Applicants with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The department is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and women and people living with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates. If no feedback is received within three months after the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The department does not cover any costs related to transport, accommodation, or meals for candidates attending interviews.
