The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo is offering a Graduate Internship Programme for the 2027/2029 intake, with five posts based at Head Office. This is a structured 24-month workplace experience opportunity designed for unemployed South African graduates who have never participated in a Public Service Graduate Internship programme in any government department. The programme is part of the department’s broader infrastructure management function, and it aims to develop young professionals in fields that are critical to the planning, delivery, and maintenance of public infrastructure across the province. Interns will be appointed from 01 April 2027 to 31 March 2029 and will receive a monthly stipend in accordance with the Department of Public Service and Administration’s Directive on Employment of Persons on Developmental Programmes in the Public Service.

The internship is specifically aimed at graduates who hold a B.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or Architectural Studies. These study fields point to a programme focused on the technical and managerial aspects of infrastructure delivery, including electrical systems, building construction, and architectural design and oversight. Applicants must be unemployed South African youth who require workplace experience to complete their professional development. They must also have never taken part in any Public Service Graduate Internship before. The selection process will consider the Employment Equity Plan of the department, and women and people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

While the core duties will be aligned to the intern’s field of study and the department’s infrastructure management mandate, the programme is intended to give graduates practical exposure to the full lifecycle of public infrastructure projects. This can be expected to include assisting with the planning and design of electrical and building projects, supporting construction management activities, participating in site inspections and condition assessments, helping to prepare reports and technical documentation, and contributing to the coordination of maintenance and refurbishment programmes. Interns will also gain experience in the administrative and regulatory processes that govern public works, including compliance with relevant legislation, health and safety standards, and procurement procedures. The programme is structured to develop both technical competence and professional workplace skills, under the guidance of experienced officials within the department.

Applicants must submit their applications through the provincial e-recruitment system, accompanied by a fully completed Z83 application form (2021 version) and a recent comprehensive CV. When applying via the e-recruitment system, copies of qualifications, an Identity Document, and a valid driver’s licence must also be attached. Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their Identity Document, Grade 12 Certificate, and qualifications to Human Resources on or before the day of the interview. Candidates with foreign qualifications are responsible for having these evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). All shortlisted candidates will be subjected to security clearance and verification of qualifications, and will also undertake two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine suitability based on the technical and generic requirements of the post, and one integrity assessment. The recommended candidate will undergo a Personnel Suitability Check for security reasons. The department reserves the right not to make any appointment, and correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates. If applicants do not receive feedback within three months after the closing date, they should consider their application unsuccessful. The department will not cover any costs related to transport, accommodation, or meals for candidates attending interviews. This is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, and the programme is an important pathway for developing the next generation of infrastructure professionals in the Limpopo public service.
