The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo is offering a Graduate Internship Programme for 2027/2029, with three posts available in the Sekhukhune District. This is a structured workplace experience opportunity aimed at unemployed South African graduates who need practical exposure to fulfil the requirements of their qualification. The programme is specifically focused on the roads maintenance function within the district, placing successful interns in a government environment where they will contribute to the planning, execution, and oversight of road infrastructure activities. The internship runs for a fixed period of 24 months, from 01 April 2027 to 31 March 2029, and participants will receive a monthly stipend in line with the Department of Public Service and Administration’s directive on developmental programmes in the public service. This is an ideal opportunity for recent graduates who have never participated in any Public Service Graduate Internship programme in any government department.

To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma or a Degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. These fields are directly relevant to the roads maintenance environment, where interns will be expected to apply their academic knowledge to real-world infrastructure challenges. Candidates must be South African youth who are currently unemployed and require workplace experience as part of their professional development. A valid driver’s licence is also required, as the nature of roads maintenance work may involve site visits and travel within the district. Applicants with foreign qualifications must ensure that their qualifications are evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) before applying. The selection process is rigorous: shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their Identity Document, Grade 12 Certificate, and qualifications on or before the day of the interview. All shortlisted candidates will also be subjected to security clearance, verification of qualifications, and two pre-entry assessments — one practical exercise to determine technical and generic suitability for the post, and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment. The recommended candidate will undergo a Personnel Suitability Check for security reasons.

The main duties of the interns will revolve around supporting the roads maintenance unit in the Sekhukhune District. This includes assisting with the assessment of road conditions, participating in the planning and scheduling of maintenance activities, and helping to monitor and report on the implementation of maintenance projects. Interns may also be involved in data collection, site inspections, and the preparation of technical documentation. They will work under the supervision of experienced engineers and technical staff, gaining hands-on experience in the public infrastructure sector. The programme is designed to bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice, so interns will be expected to be proactive, willing to learn, and able to work as part of a team. The department values the contribution of interns and provides a supportive environment where they can develop competencies in road engineering, project management, and public service delivery.

The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Women and people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. The department reserves the right not to make any appointment to the advertised posts, and the employment decision will be informed by the Employment Equity Plan of the Department. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates only; if applicants do not receive feedback within three months after the closing date, they should consider their application unsuccessful. Applicants who are dissatisfied with the outcome may seek reasons in terms of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA), Act No. 3 of 2000. It is important to note that the department will not cover any costs related to transport, accommodation, or meals for candidates attending interviews. Applications must be submitted using the prescribed Z83 application form (2021 version) along with a recent comprehensive CV, and all fields on the Z83 must be fully completed. The application process is managed through the department’s e-recruitment system, and failure to attach the required documents will result in disqualification. This internship offers a valuable chance for graduates to launch their careers in the public sector while contributing to the maintenance and improvement of Limpopo’s road infrastructure.
