This position offers an opportunity for experienced nursing professionals to join the Gauteng College of Nursing as a Lecturer for the Diploma in Advanced Midwifery, based at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Campus. Four posts are available, and the role sits within the broader mission of the college to deliver high-quality nursing education and produce competent, ethical midwives for the public health sector. As a lecturer, you will be responsible for shaping the next generation of advanced midwifery practitioners through both theoretical instruction and clinical training, while also contributing to the administrative and developmental functions of the college.
Applicants must hold a Senior Certificate or equivalent, along with a basic nursing qualification accredited by the South African Nursing Council in terms of Government Notice R425, which allows registration as a Registered Nurse and Midwife. In addition, a degree in Nursing Education and a degree in Nursing Administration, both registered with the SANC, are required. A post-basic qualification in Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science is also essential, and a master’s degree will be considered an added advantage. Candidates must possess a current SANC annual practice certificate. For appointment at the PND1 level, a minimum of five years of appropriate and recognisable clinical midwifery experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing and Midwifery is required. For the PND2 level, the same five years of clinical midwifery experience is needed, along with ten years of appropriate experience in nursing education. Knowledge of the SANC Code of Ethics, Nursing Standards, Scope of Practice, and relevant regulations is critical, as are computer literacy, sound communication, supervisory, report writing, and presentation skills. The ability to work in a team and under pressure is essential, and a valid driver’s licence is required.
The core duties involve planning, coordinating, and implementing training programmes for the Diploma in Advanced Midwifery. You will provide theoretical and clinical instruction, conduct evaluations of midwifery nursing science academic programmes, and undertake clinical accompaniment and supervision of students. You will also implement assessment strategies to determine student competencies, exercise control over students, and provide guidance and support to help them meet the minimum course requirements set by the SANC. Beyond teaching, the role requires supporting the mission of the college by serving on committees, attending and participating in meetings and college activities, and promoting the image of the college. Participation in research relevant to nursing education is expected, as is the development, review, and evaluation of curriculum. You will also be expected to engage in your own continuous professional development related to both your area of practice and nursing education.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise to determine suitability based on the technical and generic requirements of the post, and an integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. It is the applicant’s responsibility to have any foreign qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Applications must be submitted through the prescribed online process, accompanied by a new Z83 form and a comprehensive curriculum vitae. Certified copies of qualifications, identity documents, and driver’s licences will only be required from shortlisted candidates. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and if you have not been contacted within three months of the closing date, you should accept that your application was unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment to these posts.
