INDEPENDENT CORRECTIONAL CENTRE VISITOR

The Independent Correctional Centre Visitor position is a fixed-term contract role within the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services, placed under the Regional Coordination and Oversight directorate. The successful candidate will serve as an independent oversight presence at a designated correctional centre, helping to ensure that the rights and conditions of inmates are monitored and that complaints are handled fairly and efficiently. This is a public-spirited role that requires a mature, assertive individual who can work under pressure and interact confidently with both inmates and Department of Correctional Services officials. The post is available at several correctional centres across South Africa, including maximum, medium, juvenile and C-Max facilities, and applicants should note that preference will be given to candidates residing in communities near the specific centre where the vacancy exists.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Grade 12 or Senior Certificate and be computer literate with a high level of accuracy. A recommendation for nomination as an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor from a community organisation is required, and this recommendation must not be older than six months. The role demands the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, sound knowledge of the Batho Pele principles, and strong verbal and written communication skills. A valid driver’s licence is an added advantage. The position is suited to individuals who are public spirited, assertive, and capable of managing demanding situations while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.

The core duties involve conducting regular site visits to the correctional centre and reporting on urgent matters. The incumbent will interview and consult with inmates and DCS officials regarding complaints and mandatory issues, receive and capture all complaints and requests on the database, and open and maintain case files. The role also requires making follow-ups on outstanding complaints, submitting monthly reports, and providing statistical analysis of all complaints received. In addition, the visitor will attend to enquiries and carry out all reasonable instructions from the supervisor or Regional Manager. This is a hands-on role that combines administrative accuracy with direct engagement, making it essential for the candidate to be organised, empathetic, and firm when required.

The appointment is for a 36-month contract and is graded at a level that includes a portion of the full-time salary plus an allowance in lieu of benefits.
