The Assistant Director for Sustainable Forest Management is a key regulatory and enforcement role within the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, based in Pretoria. The position sits at the heart of South Africa’s efforts to protect and sustainably manage its forest resources. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the provisions of the National Forests Act, 1998 are administered, implemented, monitored and enforced across the country. This includes reviewing and developing policies, strategies, guidelines and standard operating procedures that shape how forests are managed. The incumbent will also be appointed as a Forest Officer, also known as a Forest Peace Officer, which carries specific legal enforcement powers and responsibilities. This is a demanding role that requires a strong understanding of environmental legislation, government administrative processes, and the ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders.

To be considered, applicants must hold a National Diploma at NQF level 6 in Forestry, Natural Science, or a related field recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority. A minimum of three years of experience in forestry or a closely related field is required. Candidates need a thorough working knowledge of the National Forests Act and other environmental legislation, as well as an understanding of natural resource regulation and the policies affecting the forestry sector. Familiarity with government administrative procedures, particularly the Public Finance Management Act and Treasury regulations, is essential. The role demands strong strategic capability, leadership, and people management skills, alongside excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. The ability to work under pressure, handle criticism, gather and analyse information, negotiate in difficult situations, and resolve conflict is also critical. A valid driver’s licence and a willingness to travel are mandatory.

The core duties of the position are wide-ranging. The Assistant Director will provide technical advice on the processing of licences for protected trees, state forests and natural forests, and will review and comment on environmental impact assessment reports and other specialist studies that may affect forests or protected tree species. The role also involves reviewing and adjusting forestry tariffs for forest products and services each year, in line with Treasury regulations. Promoting compliance and conducting enforcement actions are central responsibilities, including undertaking administrative or criminal measures against transgressions of the National Forests Act. The incumbent will liaise with the Directorate of Legal Services and the State Law Advisor on legal opinions and interpretations of the Act, and will support parliamentary and media queries. Compiling monthly, quarterly and annual reports for the Directorate is also required. Furthermore, the position involves raising the profile of forestry by participating in environmental forums and conducting capacity-building programmes, including training for the South African Police Service, the judiciary, magistrates, prosecutors and other state organs. The facilitation of the appointment of Forest Officers and the provision of technical advice to organs of state and stakeholders are also key responsibilities.

Applicants are required to submit a completed online Z83 form and a detailed CV with at least three contactable references. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and the Department reserves the right not to make an appointment.
