This position offers an opportunity to serve as a driver within the General Administration component of the Western Cape Mobility Department, based at Brackenfell. The successful candidate will be an integral part of the team supporting the Gene Louw Traffic College, a key training facility for traffic officers and related personnel. The role is essentially operational, ensuring that staff and students are transported safely and reliably, while also providing a messenger service across the Directorate. In addition to driving, the post holder will assist the Transport Officer with the upkeep and cleaning of the official vehicle fleet, and will be expected to handle ad hoc tasks as they arise. This is a hands-on role that requires a strong sense of responsibility, as the driver is accountable for the safe movement of goods, including the loading and offloading of heavy equipment and motorcycles, and must know how to secure these loads correctly during transit.
To be considered, applicants need a Grade 10 qualification or at least seven months of relevant work experience, along with a valid Code B driving licence or higher. Beyond the formal requirements, the role demands a solid working knowledge of vehicle operation procedures, including how to obtain trip authorities, complete motor vehicle logbooks, procure consumables such as petrol, and arrange basic services like fixing a flat tyre. Familiarity with the prescripts governing the correct utilisation and storage of official vehicles is essential, as is an understanding of proper vehicle maintenance protocols. The ideal candidate will be physically fit, since the job involves moving heavy equipment, and must demonstrate skills in computer literacy, planning and organisation, communication, customer care, and creative thinking. A willingness to work irregular hours and meet tight deadlines is also a key requirement.
The main duties are varied but centre on providing a dependable transport service for staff and students at the college, delivering messages within the Directorate, and supporting the Transport Officer with vehicle maintenance and cleaning. The role also includes ad hoc tasks that may arise in a busy government environment. Candidates should note that this is a general administration post, graded at a junior level, and the selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department. Applicants from relevant local communities will receive preference, so those living in the surrounding areas are particularly encouraged to apply. The application process requires the completion of the standard Z83 form, along with a concise CV, and the relevant post and reference number must be clearly indicated. It is important to ensure that applications are submitted before the closing date, as late or faxed submissions will not be accepted, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted within three months of the closing date. This is a stable entry-level opportunity within the Western Cape Government, ideal for a reliable and proactive individual who takes pride in providing efficient transport and logistical support.
