The Western Cape Mobility Department is seeking a Road Safety Officer to be based in the Eden Region, where the core focus will be on reducing road crashes and promoting safe behaviour among all road users. Operating within the broader provincial government structure, this role is central to the planning, coordination and delivery of road safety interventions across the region. The successful candidate will work as part of a team that hosts road safety events and campaigns, monitors their effectiveness, and provides practical feedback and solutions aimed at continuously improving service delivery. In addition to the hands-on execution of interventions, the position carries responsibility for accounting for progress and performance, as well as managing the resources and equipment needed to carry out these activities effectively.
Applicants must hold an appropriate three-year tertiary qualification at National Diploma, B-Degree or higher level in fields such as Education, Communication, Public Relations, Project Management or Social Science. A minimum of one year of relevant working experience is required, along with a valid code B driving licence. Importantly, people with disabilities that restrict their driving ability may still apply if they have reasonable access to transport, ensuring that the role is open to a broader range of candidates. The ideal candidate will bring a solid understanding of the legislative and regulatory frameworks that govern road safety, together with the ability to implement policies, manage projects, and use information systems to support knowledge management. Strong competencies in strategic planning, performance management, procurement, public finance and labour relations are also expected, as the role operates within the public service environment and must comply with the Public Finance Management Act and related prescripts.
The main duties involve supporting the planning and execution of road safety interventions in the Eden Region, hosting these interventions, and ensuring that lessons learned are translated into improved service delivery. The officer will also be accountable for tracking progress and performance, and for managing the resources and equipment assigned to the unit. This requires strong organisational and problem-solving skills, the ability to compile clear reports, and the capacity to work effectively under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and travel regularly away from the office. Irregular hours may be required to support campaigns and events.
Shortlisted candidates will be expected to attend interviews and submit vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. They will also undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and one integrity assessment focusing on ethical conduct. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the department, and by applying, candidates consent to reference checks with previous employers, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is an opportunity for a dedicated professional to make a meaningful contribution to road safety in the Western Cape.
