This position offers two vacancies for a Customer Relations Officer within the Walk-In Centre of the Western Cape Mobility Department, operating under the Western Cape Government. The role is central to the day-to-day functioning of the department’s front-line customer service environment, where the successful candidates will serve as the primary point of contact for members of the public seeking assistance with transport-related matters. Working within the broader regulatory framework of the province, the officers will be expected to manage enquiries, process applications, and provide administrative support that keeps the directorate running smoothly. The role is graded at an OSD level and is based in the Western Cape, with the work requiring a professional and service-oriented approach to public interaction.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate three-year National Diploma or a Bachelor’s degree, or a higher qualification, and have at least one year of relevant administrative support experience. The role demands a solid working knowledge of key transport legislation, including the National Land Transport Act, the National Land Transport Amendment Act, the Road Transportation Act, and the Western Cape Road Transportation Amendment Law Act, along with the associated regulations. Candidates should be comfortable interpreting and implementing legislation, regulatory frameworks, policies, and best practices relevant to the line function. Practical experience with information systems that support knowledge and information management is also required, as is the ability to manage the functions, activities, and processes of a Walk-In Centre. Financial management skills are essential, including familiarity with the Public Finance Management Act, National Treasury Regulations, Provincial Treasury Instructions, and other applicable financial policies and directives.

The main duties of the role are varied and include rendering assistance with handling enquiries, providing client service and application administration, supporting business process improvement and operational support, and delivering administrative support services. Officers will be responsible for processing applications for operating licences, managing financial monitoring and reporting procedures, performing general office administration and database management, and ensuring that all financial processes comply with relevant legislation. The work also involves preparing reports, solving problems, planning and organising activities and resources, conducting research, and working effectively under pressure. Strong communication skills, numeracy and literacy abilities, and proficiency in computer applications and systems are essential. Candidates must be able to meet tight deadlines, work irregular hours when required, and manage projects, accounting, finance, and audit functions, as well as conduct economic, financial, and statistical analysis.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes interviews, a practical exercise to assess technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. They will also be required to submit vetting and supporting documentation within a specified timeframe. The selection process will be guided by the employment equity targets of the employing department. By applying, candidates consent to the Western Cape Government contacting previous employers for reference checks, including enquiries about disciplinary records and reasons for leaving. This is an opportunity for a detail-oriented and customer-focused individual to contribute to the effective administration of land transport regulations in the Western Cape.
